How did the cops get a message from Kobeyashi?

They get some message from a lawyer or what not a couple scenes before.

No, they never got a message from any lawyer, certainly not Kobayashi. Are you referring to the scene where they find out that Keaton's girlfriend was asked to work on the Marquez case and Kujan assumes that it was Kobayashi who was behind that?

The police never mention the name of the lawyer involved in the Marquez case (?). They talk about a 'foreign' lawyer, IIRC, and then assume it's Kobayashi, because Verbal has already mentioned him by now.
