Very moving.

On a regular basis I find myself going to YouTube and rewatching the last 7 or so minutes of this amazing film which I pretty much consider a masterpiece. The scene I’m referring to, at the airport at the end is simply superb. To start with the music - the violin music is beautiful..absolutely emotionally beautiful but also gut wrenching. Madeleine Stowe is stunning in her role and the scene where Cole lays dead and she looks up and scans the area for the ‘young’ Cole well, it’s just beautiful but so so tragic. The slight smile on her face when she finds him. That whole scene is so well filmed, directed etc, it’s a work of art. Terry Gilliam did such a masterful job with this film, he deserves so much credit. Love it.

It's like an Ancient Greek Tragedy.A superb film that is actually a love story disguised as a sci fi dystopian mystery.I love 12 Monkeys.
The ending is heartbreaking ❤️‍🩹 indeed especially if you think that Cole relives the loop for infinity like a hamster 🐹 running in a wheel

I don't hate this film but I don't like it that much. A guy keeps traveling back in time to prevent a horrible future from happening and fails miserably. And in the end the message seems to be the virus that kills most everyone is meant to happen.

He doesn’t fail, he correctly identifies the person who releases the virus, allowing the future scientists to obtain it in its pure, unmutated form, allowing them to manufacture a vaccine, allowing humans to return to the surface of the earth.

His plan was never to stop the virus, and the film makes clear that you cannot change what has already happened. It’s not like The Terminator where time can be altered, in 12 Monkeys everything is fixed - two different movie approaches to time travel.

Now that you understand this you should be able to appreciate how amazing 12 Monkeys is.

so.....does it happen? I think there are at least three takes on the "insurance" woman....but I like to think she stops it from getting FURTHER? Or does she just get the virus sample to make the vaccine?

reply

I agree.

I've seen the movie likely dozens of times....and watched it again today when I stumbled on it on Peacock.....it's still amazing. Very powerful and moving. For me it starts in the movie theater and is flawless from there on out.
