It is also why he is able to know that the "kid in the well" is a hoax. Future Cole explains during the car ride that he must have seen the news story on TV when he was a kid (or something to that effect). Indeed, the kid at the airport (Young Cole) saw coverage of that story, which later allows him to know that the kid is actually hiding in the barn when he gets sent back in time.
