Extremely interesting themes but flawed movie

The main flaw is probably the future. It's barely shown and the world is not exactly explored either. Also the scientists look utterly preposterous and like demented cariacatures. Makes it hard to take seriously or feel any sense of ominous dread as we were apparently meant to. But the themes of time travel and inescapable destiny were superb. 9/10

"Also the scientists look utterly preposterous and like demented cariacatures."

That's what they are supposed to be.
Well, that's - you like it or not - our future (or is it the present time? -Yes, I think so. Our scientists (politicians) do look like ...)

The only thing I can even come up with to explain it is to make us question whether Bruce's character was truly "lunatic" by making the future seem completely weird and distorted. Otherwise it just takes away too much realism and lowers the drama

I wonder how many Gilliam films you have seen.

You're speaking of "realism" in a fantasy (science) fiction about future days that'll never be exploring the past that didn't happen...

Gilliam would be the first one to tell you reality is overrated.

Science fiction has to be based on factual information though.. right? Lol!!!

I think you guys misunderstood what my point was but that's ok...

Just to repeat, the future was barely explored, the scientists seemed like demented cariacatures. These things take away from believability and plausiblity. Why does this matter? Because it breaks the viewer's feeling of immersion in the story. That's why.

In a totally serious treatment, sure. But it's a Terry Gilliam movie. That changes everything.

In the wonderful "making of" documentary:

You'll see a part where the director/producer/writers are together to talk about the strange reactions to the movie, after initial viewings. Janet Peoples says "If they want to take it as a dark comedy" (which it was, because you can't take the satire seriously) then that's fine with them.
