i've always thought Sid is unfairly demonised. he is only using his imagination when he alters the toys. he doesn't know toys have feelings, how could he? if they persist in keeping that secret, how can he be blamed?

They didn't talk because Sid damaged them, therefore they had missing parts. The "legs" are obviously from a Barbie doll. And Hannah's doll had a dinosaur head.
shareHannah's dolls she was playing with had no heads. Therefore they can't talk. Frankly though Sid shouldn't be allowed to screw up her toys. If I were his parent I'd have grounded him for a week for doing that thing to Hannah's doll. Also something people seem to forget about Sid is that he's a teenager and past the age where kids stop playing with toys. He simply is now wanting to blow stuff up. Of course that's questionable since fireworks are supposed to only be bought by adults and not by kids.

For dramatic effect. Sid's house was suppose to represent the dark side and he, himself, was the antagonist of the entire movie. If the toys talked, it would mess up the suspense. Just who are these toys? Are they good or bad? We later learn that they help repair Buzz and help Woody.
Speaking of that duck head on the pez dispenser, I think Donkey Kong 64 got their idea for one of their bosses from this movie.
