I just stumbled upon a massive plot hole.

The entire premise of the movie, at least from Buzz's perspective, is coming to terms with him being a toy. Yet, he acts as a toy whenever humans come into contact with him. That's a pretty big delemia.

reply

No it's not.

The creators of Toy Story have once said that Buzz has a "toy instinct" as well as figured that he needs to blend in with the culture of the toys and mimic what the others do.

Actually it is. What is said outside the film can shed light, but the film by itself still has this issue because it was never addressed within that universe.

reply

That's why you listen to the commentary tracks and watch behind the scenes footage. It explains certain things that couldn't be shown in the movie due to lack of screentime and whatnot.

Lol its still doesn't make the plot hole go away. It was never addressed in the film ergo it exist.

reply

That's where the Critical Thinking skills come in handy.

Critical thinking skills are irrelevant when vital information is deliberately or ineptly left out. Sorry bud, it is what it is.

reply

Put your brain to work and think about all of the possible outcomes. It's pretty relevant when you actually put it to good use.

You seem to be under the impression this is something you can think your way through. It's not a puzzle. It's not a riddle. It's not an enigma. It's a contradiction that exist within the universe, and was never addressed in the film; ergo, it's a plot hole.

reply

It actually is something that you can think your way through. It all comes down to looking at all of the possible fillers for said hole to be sealed up. This plothole is no different. You just need to see it from different angles and it will make sense.

I think the first respondent plugged the hole just fine, he a toy instinct and he was going along with what the others were doing.

reply

If that were the case, why didn't Woody ever use it to convince Buzz he was a toy?

The writers can try to rationalize it anyway they like, it's still a plot hole.

reply

Yeah. You can say that Buzz just tried to fit in with the 'culture' and mimicked them.

But they really should have included at least a snippet of dialogue to show this, or had someone tell him 'BUZZ you're supposed to act dead.' But as it is, it's a bit silly that Buzz never encounters this problem and it's never dealt with at all.

Not a big deal, but rewatched it for the first time in probably ten years today, and the same thing took me out of the film a bit.

reply

It is mentioned in the movie in a very vague way. When he mentions to Rex & Slinky "Let me show you something. It looks as though I've been accepted into your culture. Your Chief, Andy, inscribed his name on me."
So, I don't think it's a true plot hole. Makes sense that Buzz would want to lay low & blend in until he could get back to his mission.

reply

I kind of get what the original poster was saying. Yes, you can find the answer OUTSIDE the movie, but the movie alone does not address this. Since this is the case, it is problem, within the movie.

Now if he was asking a general question of "Can someone explain why this movie was created the way it was or why it was done this way?", then you would be able to use "any other" information.

That isn't a massive plothole. The episode of Saved by the Bell The New Class where Mr. Belding lets Screech try to turn him into a statue is a massive plothole. Such a big one that I never watched that show again. Though I admit that was the only episode I ever saw.

I always thought either that all toys had an instinct to remain still whenever humans were present or Buzz was just imitating what he thought were the natives' method of survival

reply

For me the massive plot hole is why do any of them behave like toys? i mean, if they can walk and talk and think, why don't they? they are always afraid of being given away, but nobody would ever get tired of a toy that could talk.

reply

Probably for fear that they could be an enemy of the humans. When they were that way in production, they think that that is the safest way to get by. It is almost like humans behaving on instinct in doing things. If you put a human in a natural environment, we will show fear or fight back. There are little things you could observe and ask the same question. It is instinct.

but as toys they are always at risk of being thrown away, or something else unpleasant happening to them - I mean Sid comes in for a lot of criticism fora ltering toys, but very young children routinely do things like biting and chewing toys, pulling bits off them, throwing them downstairs or out of windows etc.
