Safeway in Ohio?
Chris Farley at some point says, "We used to go to Safeway all the time and get caught trying to steal doughnuts."
What's up with that? I didn't think there were Safeways in the Midwest.
Safeways are all over the country now, since they bought out several other chains of grocery stores and changed them into Safeways too.
shareYeah but your message is dated 2009 ("all over the country now"), but this movie was made in 1995 ---- 14 years earlier.
So while maybe there were Safeways in Ohio in 2009, I am certain there weren't any Safeways in Ohio in 1995. I used to drive a lot through northern Ohio and Indiana in the '90s, and I never saw any Safeways there.
However, there were definitely Safeways in Chicago then. And part of the movie takes place in Chicago. So perhaps the script writers got a bit confused or 'creative' with plot development, and the Safeways reference just kind of slipped in.
They probably should have referred to a grocery chain common in northern Ohio at the time, but maybe one of the writers had seen a Safeways in Chicago, and it just sort of stuck.
Who knows.
