eres tu?

the song in spanish that they sing along to in the car, was that ever a popular song or is this just a goofy joke in the movie that they both know all the lyrics?

From Wikipedia:

"In 1974, "Eres tú" became one of the few Spanish language songs to reach the top 10 in the United States, peaking at #9 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart..."

"Eres tu" was a popular song back then, and it did get a lot of air play, so it's not unusual that they found it on the radio. What was sort of silly was that both of them knew all the lyrics, and sang it with such passion. Guys don't normally do that. Oh, and they also knew the lyrics to "Superstar" by The Carpenters. They even started crying when they sang that one! Guys don't normally do that, either.

Thank you! That clears it up. I love superstar because of this movie. Maybe I should download eres tu, too.

One might almost get the impression that this was a scene played for laughs in a comedic film, a genre known for doing such mysterious things...
