Callahan Auto Parts Impact

Ok, the basic premise of the movie is that if the Callahan factory is sold and shut down by Zalinsky, the town of Sandusky would be devasted. But if you do the math, it doesn't add up. When Richard is driving Tommy home from the airport at the beginning of the movie, when they enter Sandusky, they pass a sign listing the town's population at around 30,000 ( don't recall the exact figure). During the course of the movie, it's stated 300 people work at the factory. If you assume every employee also lives in Sandusky (unlikely, but makes the math easier), that means a whopping 1% of the town's population works at the factory. Even if you figure some neighboring businesses would also be affected ( restaurants, diners, etc), it seems unlikely that an entire town would face financial ruin if a business employing 1% of it's residents went under. Yes, I know it's devastating for those that lose their jobs, I work for a defense contractor that just laid off over 200 people, many of them friends, but the town we live in survives.

Also, the town of Sandusky, OH is home to one of the world's greatest amusement parks- Cedar Point, the roller coaster mecca!

Well they said the tire factory and muffler plant had already shut down so maybe Callahan was the towns last hope, also this is a movie you should not take so seriously.

That's exactly how I took it. When the last factory closes the purchasing power of the entire town goes down accordingly. Cedar Points is great for seasonal work or jobs for unmarried adults without children but it can't keep families in town. Also remember the new parts offered new jobs for the unemployed as well.
