Their review is spot-on. Dreadful film.

reply

Yes, this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

reply

Not in the least, it's a wonderful comedy. My all time favorite to be honest.

reply

You both are as retarded as Siskel and Ebert. This movie is my favorite comedy movie of all time and I love it to death. It's pretty damn funny. My teacher loves the movie. It's one of Chris Farley's decent movies before he died. It's hilarious.

<WHY...SO...SERIOUS?!>
Sweeney Todd is THE best musical EVER made.

reply

They aren't retarded. Have some respect for the dead (Gene). And your teacher is probably an idiot who lets kids get away with crap.

reply

have some respect for the dead (Chris Farley)

reply

I agree with them, this movie was terrible. I love Gene saying that they didn't write a script here. EXACTLY!!!!!!!

reply

I love the film, but I respect the opinion of those who didn't. I realize it's not everyone's thing.

One thing I want to say is (not trying to stereotype, just an observation) that Siskel and Ebert (as well as many other critics who hated it) are from an older generation in which humor like this is simply not funny. I wouldn't really call it SNL humor exactly, maybe more Gen-X humor (and Gen Y too I guess), which explains why so many critics hated it back in 1995 but why so many people love it now.

It's a different world now, and humor standards have changed a lot, more observational/ironic/slapstick orientated and somewhat less plot-driven than Baby Boomers like Siskel and Ebert would have been used to. (Again, just generalizations here.) I realize there are many X/Y'ers nowadays who probably hate it too, but I think that the generational divide accounts for a lot of why it's considered by many to be a forgotten comic gem nowadays and was so critically loathed when first released.

Siskel and Ebert both assert that they just don't "get" Farley's appeal on Saturday Night Live or in this film. Many other critics no doubt expressed similar notions at the time. But nowadays there is a huge fanbase for him, both critically and popularly. As said, that was fifteen years ago, and everything's different now.

reply

I think the problem with the film is it tries to be too many things. This was actually a product. Look at what you have. You have two SNL stars, the SNL producer producing this, and SNL writers writing it. It was like they gave SNL a deal to do whatever they wanted, whether or not it was really worth it.

reply

Tommy Boy is a brilliant film, and I don't care what Ebert or Siskel (Did) think!

reply

Who in their right mind doesn't like Tommy Boy?

reply

A bunch of middle aged men.

reply

The people who hate on tommy boy are the same people who pretty much hate anything funny in life. If someone says or does something funny these people just say "that's just stupid" or "that's just silly". They are just miserable human beings who want everyone around them to be miserable.

"Tommy Boy" is what I call a good "Rainy Saturday afternoon" movie...You can't do anything outside, kind of dreary day. You're not in the mood for a heavy drama..."Happy Gilmore", "Smokey and the Bandit", "Tommy Boy" ,etc. Sure, they don't have great scripts or plots, but it's an enjoyable 90-120 minutes. Nothing wrong with that

reply

One of the best comedies ever made.

reply

im glad they are both dead. Their reviews were the worst

reply

Regardless if they were right or not. Film Critics are the worlds most useless profession. Mainly because nobody give a sh!t what they have to say.

Besides i don't take advice of how good a movie is from the guy who wrote "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls".
