Is it just me, or did the ending make no sense?

How come Tommy's stepmom wasn't arrested too? She defrauded Tommy's dad and she was also the bigamist. Instead she ended up leaving with Kalinski and she didn't go to jail with the her husband. I love the movie but the ending is a little off.

yeah i dont get it either. she completely gets away with it, and tommy sees it and doesn't even care. he actually smirks at the fact that her and salinksy are gonna go hookup.

the only possible explanation i can think of is that tommy doesn't care that shes hooking up with him because he knows she'll scam him like she did his dad, but i seriously doubt that the film makers thought about it that much.

The people who take her husband away are not cops, but his security guards. He doesn't kick her out cause he thinks she is hot.

She wouldn't be arrested at that point anyway, as bigamy charges would not have been filled. His warrants would put him in jail. She would likely be arrested 6 months or so later when enough evidence had been collected to press charges.

Oh, so it was just me! Hahaha... thanks, Intimidating-Sheep.

The thing that I didn't like was why not have a second wedding with Tommy and Michelle, rather than him on the boat all by himself. These writers were retarded jerks.

The last scene was pretty lame.

Maybe it was Paul's idea to do the whole thing? But I thought the film was dumb anyway.

Why does everyone on IMDB feel the need to play movies against reality?

It's FUNNIER that Dan Akroyd picks up Bo Derek. This is not a documentary, a scene from 'America's Most Wanted'.

It's a SNL-related movie. Aykroyd is the 'father figure' to this enterprise....they gave his character the consolalation prize of Bo Derek, as it were.

I always felt the ending was kind of slapped-together, but the real meat and potatoes of the movie -- the journey -- is what makes it great. I just think they didn't know how to cap it off properly.

I thought the ending was fine, it showed Tommy's dad was around spiritually and was proud of him for what he did. It was a nice go lucky ending, because the journey as over and it ended well. I think the whole marriage thing wouldn't have made much sense because Tommy and Michelle just got to know each other again, it would have been fast.

I think they let Beverly get away on purpose. Zalinzky signed the deal and it was all done, so they wanted to get him back for being a jerk to them earlier, because they knew she would try to get him for everything he had eventually. She probably would get arrested down the line, Paul would rat her out for something.

Yes, that part was fine.

I didn't get why Beverly wasn't arrested or why Zalinsky wanted to go out with her. It seemed to me that Zalinsky understood that her and her husband were working together scamming people.

Tommy should have been arrested to!

Technically Tommy Boy, Paul, and Beverly all should have been arrested - I'll bet that the writers considered how to keep it funny and realistic simultaneously - but ending it the way they did made it funnier, more light-hearted, and "cinematic" than it otherwise would have been if more realistic.

Just imagine how potentially dull it would have been if Tommy Boy, Paul, and Beverly were hauled off in handcuffs by the police... maybe it still could have been funny and light-hearted, but now you'd have a longer film with more exposition to deal with as a result of the new issues created from the arrests.

It could have been more of a pseudo-romantic comedy if Tommy Boy and Michelle had married at the end as was mentioned by stevenackerman69, and would have capped it off well - and they still could have done the boat scene with just Tommy Boy and the wind.

One of my favorite comedies, it really stands up well even after all these years.

Beverly committed bigamy but charges still have to be brought up. Bigamy is often thrown out unless you intended marrying to acquire assets, etc. which Beverly and Paul clearly did. In this case Beverly (if prosecuted) would face up to 5 years in prison as a class C felony which is the same across every state.

If Tommy Boy, Richard, and Michelle did not report bigamy (or the other Callahan execs) then Beverly can walk away. That said, I'm sure one definitely did in which case a warrant would be issued for Beverly if she disappeared. At that point Beverly probably knew she was screwed so hey... go hang out with the rich guy and hope everyone forgets and targets her old husband, Paul.

As for Paul, Paul was immediately screwed because he was already wanted on charges of arson, mail, and something else I think... so once the Cops got ahold of him he'd immediately be apprehended and sent to jail awaiting trial. At this time per Michelle, they could add computer fraud to the list of his already existing crimes to try and extend prison time, etc.

Technically Beverly committed a crime but until someone prosecutes her, she's free. Paul was already a wanted criminal.

Tommy probably snickered at the situation because he's deep down a buffoon, but I'm sure one of the other five there (Richard, Michelle, 3 Callahan execs) reported Beverly to authorities or pressed charges, which would force a court date and trial... in which case most assuredly a class C felony and 5 years prison would occur.

But who knows... everyone seemed fairly incompetent so maybe Tommy just kept eating M&Ms, Richard worried about his hair, Michelle ate more donuts and killed kids, the one guy had the other kidney removed and died, and the other 2 just fell off the face of the Earth in a routine helicopter accident.
