I LOOOOOVEEEE this movie, so I have seen it hundreds of times! There are a few lines in the movie that I don't get though:
When they get in the car for the first time, Chi Chi says "Oooh, Mr. Luke!" What does that mean? Who is that?
Noxie calls someone a richotart? Not sure on the spelling, but I don't get it.
She also says this place looks like it was designed by Ma Jones. Who is that?
When Vida and Chi Chi are fighting, Chi Chi says something like your mother throwing up and then something about licking it up. I can never make out that line, no matter how many times I hear it.
I love, love, LOVE this movie. Having said that, I will try my best to help you on your questions.
I think Chi Chi is saying, " Look, look at this!"
It sounded like Noxie is saying, "rent-a tart."
Then she might've said, "Who's their art designer, Ma Joad?" (reference to Steinbeck's THE GRAPES OF WRATH).
The fight between Vida and Chi Chi is harder to understand; Vida tells Chi Chi to shut up, and then Chi Chi responds with something similar to "I don't shut up, I grow up, and when I look at you I throw up---something about (your) mother licks it (throw up) up.
I think you're right about the Ma Joad thing, because someone else in the movie (maybe Noxi) referenced the dust bowl and the Ma Joad reference would be in line with The Grapes of Wrath/dust bowl comparison.
Rent-a-tart would make sense too, because Chi Chi made a reference to being under greasy, fat men, so maybe she tricked herself out from time to time?
I'm not sure if Chi Chi is saying "Look, look at this", but she might be saying "Ooooh, Mister LOOK"? The fight between Vida and Chi Chi is so unclear at the end, you're right. I think Chi Chi at least says "Looking at you makes we want to throw up". After that, I have no idea.
I think I'm going to break out the DVD and see if there are subtitles. Maybe they can shed some light?!
OK - I popped in the DVD and watched the entire thing again with the subtitles. Just to confirm:
1) Noxi did say Ma Joad.
2) She also did in fact say Rent-a-Tart.
3) When they were in the car, Chi Chi says, "Ay...it's the look" but pronounces look like the word Luke.
4) During the Vida/Chi Chi fight, it goes something like "Shut up yourself...when I look at you it makes me wanna throw up and your mother's waiting on the floor just to lick it up. What that means, I have no idea, but Chi Chi did say a lot of silly things I guess!
One other line I picked up was when they were buying the car, Vida says "Mary, Louise, Alice...this is a land yacht." I'm not sure who/what she's referencing there.
During the Vida/Chi Chi fight, it goes something like "Shut up yourself...when I look at you it makes me wanna throw up and your mother's waiting on the floor just to lick it up.
lol! I remember when we were kids, we used to say this to other kids who told us to shut up. I don't think it means anything really lol!
I watched this scene about 10 times, and what I heard Chi Chi saying was "Ay nenita! Look! Look at this! Look what I found!" I had the hardest time understanding her too-she overdid the accent...
As for Mary, Alice and Louise, girl...I have no idea who the hell they are! lol!! reply share
Haha - Mary Louise Alice is probably a Vida-specific type of thing to say I'm guessing! Thanks for your help in figuring out all the other ones. I just love this movie more and more!

You have it basically right, I think this was a common insult to throw around between kids back in the 50s, because they also use these lines in Stand By Me, verbatim.
