"Give it a name" , what can I say

'Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead' is *only* one of the best movies around, and to come here and find no comments on it is unbelievable. Either that or my cine taste is worse than I thought. A movie oozing class and the casting is superb having gotten most of the actors before they became a lot more well known than they are now, most folks will recognise most if not all of Jimmy's cadre of misfits. I give this gem 10/10. Not to be missed!

-Give it a name

I agree and even more - i give 10/10.

I agree but i think calling it the best film ever is a slight exagerration. It is a film i can always come back to and admittedly it is a bit corny in a weird not really kind of way you have to love it.

Loved it as well. Is it out on DVD?

I'd like to buy it. Great cast.

reply

All of you are so right, this is one of the best movies!
Andy Garcia makes an awsome job as "Jimmie The Saint"
And for you "Kid_Swamp" there is a DVD but it's very very hard
to get a hold of it...
Good luck!

reply

I don't know where u live, but here in Sweden u can get for 9$ (easy to find also)

Good luck

reply

i was able to purchase this movie on http://www.circuitcity.com for only $12.99. so head over there and buy it, if you're looking for it.

reply

I agree also, this is one of my favorite movies.

BTW...has anyone seen Road to perdition? (lame movie in my oppinion)
Dosen't the "Hit man" remind u alot of Mr Scchhh from Things to do in D.?
It's a rip off- I think!

U think this movie sucks? Give away your TV & DVD...

Easy Wind: Remember when you was a kid and you would spend the whole year waiting for summer vacation and when it finally came it would fly by just like that? It's funny, Jimmy, life has a way of flying by faster than any old summer vacation really *beep* does.

Boat drinks!

Oh yes ssannelli "Road to Perdition" is sux & is over-rated..:)

this movie is excellent...i'm sick of people calling it a tarrantino rip off...tarantino's movies indeed are better, BUT he is not the only director who can excel in that genre...Fleder did a great job. 8/10

reply

Can't say I have ever heard anybody say it is a Tarantino ripoff. The story does go back and forward a bit but only as much as most movies do that use that particular linear style.

Glad you like it..:)

( I sound like the doting director of it)

Ahh I see, thanx.

'Boat drinks'

reply

Your right about raod to Perdition. I liked it actually, but the hit men are exactly the same.

reply

not the best film ever made, but certainly one of the most enjoyable, stylish and slickest. Add to that an incredible cast (buscemi and walken especially), and scripting genius, and you have my favourite film.

Boat drinks indeed, gentlemen

"I AM GODZILLA, AND YOU ARE JAPAN!!"

word this is a gem 10/10

I liked this movie, but, with regards to the catchphrase "Give it a name:"

They really drive home that this is a catchphrase. I mean, each character says it at least once if not more. (at least I think so, I'm not going to check...my point is it's repeated a lot). As if after this movie came out, everyone was going to be walking around saying "Give it a name" every other sentence. Well, that didn't happen, and as a result, it sounds kinda goofy. "Boat drinks" was cool because the meaning was explained. But "Give it a name?"....they might as well have been saying "Put it to bed" or "Eat a banana." It was arbitrary, and thus, a little unbelievable in my opinion. It sounded too much like writing.

When I first heard the phrase "Give it a name," I had no idea what it meant. Then, as luck sometimes works, I was in a psychology class where the instructor talked about this. I don't recall exactly what "give it a name" means, but from what I do remember, when you have a problem you need to solve, the first thing you need to do is to give the problem a name so your mind recognizes the problem and can then begin to think of a solution to the problem.

While this may be a little off, I remember that it does have to do with psychology in some way. Whether or not they used it this way in the movie is a different story. It seems to fit, because every time a character says it, it's usually in response to something bad that has happened (if I remember correctly).

Sounds like a good explanation.
To me, it seemed like they were using it kind of like "forgetaboutit" which was highlighted in Donnie Brasco (1997) as an all-purpose phrase. Maybe the gangsters in "Things to Do" had a healthier approach where instead of using denial and foregetting about it, they would confront their problem by giving it a name.
Also, since I've never heard the phrase outside of this movie, I'd guess it was an invention of the writer, but I've never talked to gangters from the Denver area, so for all I know, it's a regional thing.

That wasn't the only catchphrase that they used.

One of the things that I liked about the movie was that they used their jargon without any regard for the audience. They didn't dumb it down for the rest of us and left it to us to figure out what they were saying (with the exception of "boat drinks" which they did explain).

For example, we have the "Man with the Plan" kept calling the job "an action" rather than a "piece of work" (meaning just rough him up, but don't kill him)

Can't we all just get along?

Give it a name...I've been trying to do just that for this movie for nearly a year!

I saw it last October late night on cable. A friend and I had just finished setting up our respective departments for a convention (Anime Reactor in Chicago/Rosemont). The two of us had walked into this film in the middle and then several other people wandered into the room. By the end of the film (which I had missed), there were about 25 people in the room...some American and some Japanese nationals (the GoHs from Japan)...all of us throwing around the term "buckwheat" and discussing how *beep* up, yet cool it was.

(Yes, I expect one day that an anime or a manga will be produced and it will have in it a character who gets killed in that manner. There were about 7 anime and manga artists in that room when we watched it. They all were amazed and disgusted by that particular manner of death...as were we all.)

But none of us knew the name of the film....

I only found out yesterday, when I threatened to toss one on a rude patron one (I was working the door at a bar). One of the DJs heard me use the term and began to talk about the movie with me, thereby giving me the name.

I plan on getting this and adding it to my library ASAP. Then, for this year's con, I will show it in it's entirety...cause it's that freakin' cool of a movie!
