The Ending - Help

Just saw the film for the fist time over the weekend. A friend who recommended the film it believes they somehow avoided death and wound up together on the boat alive, and of course, out of town/sight together. My take is that this is them together in the afterlife. Or at least, this is Jimmy The Saint's afterlife.

Alright movie lovers - please weigh in...what's the deal with the boat ending?

If you listen to Jack Warden explain "boat drinks", he says something like when your life is over, your in the sun, sitting on a big cabin cruiser having boat drinks.

They didn't escape, Fran didn't get his tat's removed, Pieces didn't get rid of his leprosy or what ever.

I've always wondered if there was any connection between "Boat Drinks" in this film and the Jimmy Buffett song. I've never heard the expression anywhere else.

The ending certainly ends up like the song.

"I've got to fly to Saint Somewhere.

I'm close to bodily harm." - Jimmy Buffett
