Bernard wanted Meg to be happy so why did TMWTP stop the wedding?

All Bernard wanted was for Meg to be happy even if it was with another man so why did The Man With The Plan try and stop the wedding if that's what Bernard wanted?

Because Bernard was sick in the head over her. He just said that about Meg so that he could look normal and still talk about her. I mean, he was in the playground fishing for sapplings.

Or, if you like, it was a case of miscommunication between father and son, which makes the whole setup even more tragic.
