Why such bad reviews?
Apparently it has like 29% on RottenTomatoes???
This isn't rocket science; but as far as a good fun horror flick (which is ACTUALLY hard to find!), this movie is good!
Geez!

Agreed. It's definitely one of my favorites that deserves better.
shareBecause "pro" critics are filled with snobs that hate everything that's genre. ;)
Sometimes they are worst then internet "critics" (mainly referring to "reviews" here or blogs)
I agree that critics are pretty useless, but I don't think genre has anything to do with it. The TV series has an 88% fresh rating. I think the problem was that the story wasn't your typical Tales From The Crypt material. Also, one of the things critics loved about the series was all of the celebrity cameos, and while I think they're perfect (especially since they were in the first season), I don't think Sadler/Zane were the leads the critics wanted to drool over.

If you took this movie seriously, then you missed out on a good film.
This is a Horror-Comedy that knew when to be imaginative and when not to take itself seriously. The backstory mythos involving God and the beginning of time was textbook creativity to drive home the base of the event happening in the film. At its core there was a menacing level of seriousness to establish and solidify the conflict. The threat is thus well realized and leaves us rooting for the characters' survival. However, aside from all this, this film was balls-to-the-wall entertaining, expertly amusing in its wacky quality, and Billy Zane's performance is brilliant. Everyone loved him in this movie. I'd put him up there with Raul Julia as Gomez Addams; two wacked out performances even better than Keaton's as Beetlejuice (although I suppose this isn't the best comparison since Keaton has such limited screentime in BJ despite putting on a classic performance).
Everything about this film was well done. It's hard to comprehend why anyone would not like it. It's a creative Horror-Comedy that actually isn't meant to be anything like the "Tales from the Crypt" show that it is a cinematic spinoff of. It has no ironic ending, no twist ending, or even an unhappy or freakish one. It's pretty straightforward and nothing like the series it gets its name from.
It's a better, more balanced, and smoother film than The Frighteners, which misses the mark at being charming, horrific, or effectively humorous, things that Demon Knight pulls off with flying colors. The former pales by comparison.
I'm not a control freak, I just like things my way
Because critics are idiots...
So you do have a plan? Yeah, Mr. White! Yeah, science!
That's why I refuse to go by critics reviews. This movie is on my top 3 favorite horror movies of all time. Great movie!

I liked it. Many critics are especially harsh on the horror genre for some reason.
"Better beware, there's a full moon tonight!"
Critical consensus of this film has definitely improved over the years thankfully. I saw several websites do articles on it for it's 20th anniversary last year. Always glad to see it get some love
