Something That's Always Bothered Me

Maybe it's been posted here before, but I couldn't find it. So anyway, before Ryu fights Fei Long, why did they throw him into the fighting arena? I can't remember the exact wording of the 2 guys that tossed him in there, but I believe they said something along the lines of he was being a smartass/bragging (which he protested by saying "I didn't do anything!" or something along those lines), which is DEFINITELY not Ryu's character. Can someone explain this perhaps?

It's possible that he criticised the fighter from a martial artist's point of view, which isn't necessarily out of his character, and the other guys just took it too personally.

That sounds plausible. Thanks :-)

Well, I doubt it was anything like the Bugs Bunny incident with the big dumb boxer. I'm guessing Ryu made a mild "Hmph" and smirked at the fighters.

That's possible, or maybe they saw that Ryu was a big, fit guy dressed in what is recognized the world over as a Karate Gi (or something to do with martial arts) and wanted some new blood in the ring. Thus, they made up the excuse that he said something he shouldn't have and then tossed him in, resulting in Ryu being so surprised and oppositional to what was happening.
In the American/English dub, he seems ambivalent about fighting, but in the original Japanese, he does make it perfectly clear that he doesn't want to fight.

By the way, here are the exact words if I remember correctly:
Fei Long: "What's this?"
some guy: "Nothin'. Just a little extra fun, that's all."
Fei Long: "Fun?"
some guy: "Yeah, they're draggin' some poor schmuck into the ring who was dumb enough to shoot off his big mouth."
Ryu: "Hey, I didn't say anything!"
guard 1: "The fighters don't take smartass remarks lightly around here, chicken!"
guard 2: (being sarcastic) "You can back up your words, can't ya?"

"There is no escape, John!"

If anything another answer might be that someone in the crowd made a remark and they mistook it for Ryu, being a big fighter looking guy, and threw him into the ring. Only an idea.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I could also guess, however, that the guards just pretended to hear him say something because they wanted an excuse to throw someone into the ring and get the crap beat out of him, which didn't actually turn out the way they intended. Just a guess, though.
