Jane Austen Festival

I am going to be in Bath for the Jane Austen Festival in September. As I am an 'older' lady who has to lose weight, advice on my costume???

How wonderful summeriris! It sounds like it would be a lovely experience to attend. As far as a costume suggestions, why not dress as your favorite Austen heroine from your favorite adaptation? That would be quite fun IMO!

All my hopes are dashed, my grandsons would rather go to Alten Towers Theme park than the costume parade. I.m trying to be phlisophical, they are after all 10 and 12, but still. I had my bonnet and costume designed and started. Still I will get to some parts of the Festival and I will still be having afternoon tea with a Mr Darcy. I hope the scones are good.

Oh no! I don't blame you for being disappointed - but I can see how young boys would rather go to a theme park.

How divine! I'm quite envious. :) I'm betting the scones will be wonderful too.

Well they couldn't be worse than mine. You could tile the roof with my scones. It's a source of constant frustration to me. My cakes are quite good and the bread usually turns out, but the scones? I've given up on them.

Kudos to you for making scones, even if they aren't up to your standards. I've never tried to make them myself, but my mom - who has a gift for baking - has made some tasty cranberry scones in the past.

ETA: Accidental double post, sorry!

My mother also made excellent scones. I just can't do it. But I do like eating them, with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

I think the secret is to have a light touch and be very gentle when you roll out. The other tip I picked up is to glaze the tops only - if the glaze runs down the sides, they won't rise properly. And eat them very fresh!

I was in Bath for the day a few years ago, on the very same day (coincidentally) that people were all dressed up as Jane Austen characters. It was fantastic!

~I have tried all that, it just doesn't work for me. Scones hate me. I am really looking forward to it. Maybe I'll take my bonnet, the boy's can hide.

HI there, Supergran-

do you have a foolproof recipe for scones? I love them, but I`ve never managed to make them taste like the ones I get in England... I just hope it isn`t due to our German flour I`ll try to keep my touch light in rolling them if you provided me with a recipe that actually works!
I`d love to be in Bath again- it`s one of the most beautiful towns I know!

It is our choices that show what we truly are... far more than our abilities.
