When does this movie take place?

Okay, I guess a better question would be "During whose reign does the movie take place?" I've not read the book, but I've seen the movie many times, and I don't recall anything that indicates when it takes place. I'm assuming George (V?) or Victoria, but I really don't know.

I think I read somewhere that the movie was intended to be set in 1800. Judging by its overall look, I'd say that it fits that general era -- late 1790s to maybe the very early 1800s -- pretty well. That was during the reign of George III.

According to Wikipedia, Jane Austen wrote an early version of Sense and Sensibility in 1795, and even though the final version was published in 1811, the story itself was apparently always intended to take place in the 1790s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sense_and_Sensibility).

I can't recall seeing a period film where everyone bowed and curtsied so much.

Check out P&P95. They do it there too.

It was a formal age; like most ages before our own. Most film and series in a historic setting don't have half enough bowing and curtsying to be realistic.
