For those who think this is an "Alien clone".
The movie is based on the short story "Second Variety", which was published in 1953.
Funny how some self-proposed movie critics disregard essential facts.

people think that this is a Alien clone?
shareI could stretch my imagination if someone said this was a clone of Body Snatchers, but Alien?

just read more P.K.Dick's stories, especially Jon's World, than you will learn how "original" Terminator was...
shareHell this has Dan O'Bannons stuff in it. Can't you see the similiarities? This has huge mining corporation(Company), no one is to be trusted (Ash), very Alienish plot twists, aftershock, it is even filmed from the same kind angles (Even tho I find more similiarites if we move to Aliens).
But I liked this. Damn I liked this!
I don't kill people, I torch them.

Does anyone know where I can buy "Second Variety" sepratley (no other stories included) or read the story online?
Thanks
I found it in an anthology of short stories that became movies called "The Reel Stuff". It's edited by Brian Thomsen and Martin H. Greenberg and is published by Daw. You should be able to get it at any bookstore (I got mine at barnes and noble).
"Oderint dum metuant"--Caligula
I found several copies of this story by itself at abebooks.com or you could try powells.com.
well, it has lot of Dan O'Bannon's stuff in it, because Dan o'Bannon wrote the screenplay, every screenwriter seems to have his own "style" so this is Dan's.
But in fact, Alien (and Aliens etc. much more) has many similarities with a Philip-K-Dick-Story. The kind of story in which you (=the major character) can't even trust yourself, where everything in different from what you expected... Plus a certain gloominess in decor and evironment...
Whereas the finale seems VERY Alienish to me. ;o)
Unfortunately the second half of this film is TOO predictable. But I liked it very very much nonetheless!!!
The finale was Alienish and kinda goofy. Come on the little teddybear...but overall this film deserves much more recognition. I felt certain elements were lifted from Carpenter's "The Thing", mainly the inability for the humans to trust each other. With a largr budget this film would definitely rank in sci-fi top 10. Like Chris Walken needed more cowbell, this film could have used more screamers.
shareI didn't realize that he also did Total Recall, which was based on another PKD story. Many similarities there, esp the mining colony, alt energy sources (turbinium and berynium) and toxic atmospheres.
sharei have´nt seen this movie but when i visited this page i first came to think of Body Snatchers
sharewhatever you may think, i think the resmblance to moebius' "airtight garage of jerry cornelius" (heavy metal magazine) is scary...
shareHi,
I got the story "Second Variety" when I bought the Minority Report paperback.
It's also available as the cover story in paperback (ISBN: 1857988809) and I THINK it might be in ISBN 0752864319, But I'm not sure.
I'm really sorry this doesn't answer your question (You wanted a standalone story) but as far as I know this is the only way you can get it.
It's about £5 (GBP) from Amazon.co.uk.
Negative, I am a meat popsicle.
the phillip k. dick reader is the best collection of all of his short stories. go for the individually titled ones after, such as The Eye of The Sybil.
