why the low rating?
i think that this is a great movie and i didn't see enough flaws for it to rate a 5.8. i would put it somewhere around 6.5-7.
why's the rating so low?
The only real answer to that question is that that's where it's been ranked by IMDb visitors who have bothered to rank it at all.
I agree with you -- I think it's an excellent movie and I'd rate it around seven or eight myself. (In fact I'm pretty sure an eight is what I did give it. EDIT: Yep, it is. Just checked.)

Personally I don't know who IMDb rates movies, but if there's more who watch it rather as a scifi movie, rather than more philosophical, it might turn out that way. There's not so much cool scifi effects.
Most people are not very bright (to put it lightly), and so are most IMDB raters. It is kinda unfortunate that that so many of them actually rated this classic. I'd prefer them to stick to Dark Knight and Transformers
