Sci-fi horror in the 90s and 00s.
I don't think anyone would disagree that sci-fi horror was at its finest in the 80s, when we had films like Predator, Aliens, The Thing, and The Fly.
That said, I'm curious what people consider to be the best sci-fi horror of the 90s and 00s. Of the last two decades, my general ratings and rankings of the genre would be:
Pitch Black- 9/10
I Am Legend- 8/10
The X-Files: Fight the Future- 7.5/10
Alien 3- 7.5/10
Screamers- 7/10
Alien Resurrection- 7/10
Mimic- 7/10
Ghosts of Mars- 6/10
The Invasion- 6/10
Body Snatchers- 6/10
Doom- 6/10
Sphere- 6/10
Event Horizon- 6/10
The Objective- 5.5/10
Alien vs. Predator- 5/10
Supernova- 5/10
Pandorum- 5/10
Altered- 4/10
AvP: Requiem- 4/10
Virus- 3/10
Screamers: The Hunting- 2/10
Pitch Black and Screamers were among my two genre faves, and they both have quite a bit in common. They're both essentially survival tales set on an alien planet with a small group of survivors battling a seemingly innumerable enemy. They offer a good mix of sci-fi, action, and horror.
Of the two, PB is the stronger film. It's overall more confidently directed (Direct David Twohy mastered his craft by this point), has stronger performances, and has a much better ending.
