Adapting a Live Action Movie Part IX - Marvel Style Approach

Disney bought the film rights to Marvel comics for a cool $4 Billion dollars and created Marvel Studios in the process. Given the money made from Marvel productions (Hulk, Dare Devil, Elektra, Spider Man, X-Men) at the time, it wasn't a terrible idea nor was it genuinely great. All it had was potential. 5 years later and the studio is being lauded as one of the most successful in the history of cinema. Employing a risky, new, and bold approach to movie making has paid off in spades as almost $6 Billion in ticket sales has been recorded around the world thus far. With home entertainment and merchandising, they have most likely doubled their profits.

Marvel Studios made 5 different solo super-hero films that all lead up to the main event:

The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man
Thor
Iron Man 2
Captain America: The First Avenger

The main event was The Avengers. One of the highest grossing movies of all time. Each solo film had cameos or supporting characters show up from other Marvel movies. Iron Man showed up in the Hulk; Black Widdow starred in Iron Man 2, Hawkeye was in Thor, and Nick Fury or Agent Coulson were in all five films. They built the Marvel universe this way to sell their main team up film and we know that it was worth the wait.

A live action Sailor Moon project may be able to work in the same way. In fact, the story of Sailor Moon's first season is remarkably close to what Marvel is trying to accomplish with it's 3 phase strategy. Find a team of super heroes (Sailor Senshi), bring them together to fight the forces of evil (Negaverse), employ this strategy with the help of a secret network and several top agents like Nick Fury and Agent Coulson (Artemis and Luna), and search for the infinity gems (Rainbow Crystals) which will eventually lead to the infinity gauntlet (Silver Imperium Crystal). But I digress -

There are many different combinations that can work in order to bring the Pretty Soldiers together and they are all up to the imagination, but IF an imaginary Naoko Studios (Or Senshi Studios; whatever you want to name it) were to use the Marvel strategy this would be the general overall story I would go with:

Film #1: Sailor V - An introduction of the first Sailor Scout, Artemis, and the search for the Moon Princess. Sailor V works with Interpol to solve a plethora of grand theft crimes, specifically in precious gems. They discover the negaverse and the plot to find the rainbow crystals.

Film #2: Sailor Moon, Mars, and Mercury - The origin story of these ladies and the introduction of three more sailor scouts leads to the revelation that there are 7 rainbow crystals and when united, they form the silver imperial crystal (starting to really sound like Marvel's filmverse now, isn't it?). Luna leads the pack and tells them they are looking for the Moon Princess who can find and unite the Rainbow crystals. Introduction of Tuxedo Mask.

Film #3: Sailor Jupiter and Venus - An obvious pairing and a great way to introduce more villains and more rainbow crystals. This could even work as a sub plot to the final entry into this first phase, though there's more than enough material to make a standalone film with Jupier and Venus.

Film #4: The final entry into this trilogy where the Moon princess is revealed as the whole team unites to stop the negaverse from taking control of all the rainbow crystals. Tuxedo Mask is killed and the girls find out where they really come from: The Moon Kingdom. They then proceed to kick Queen Beryl's ratchet ass.

What say you? How do you feel about an Marvel style approach to selling the Sailor Moon story? I can see this working all the way up to Sailor Moon's own phase 3 (Sailor Saturn/Sovereign of Silence/3 talismans/Outer Senshi team up). And far beyond into a phase 5 with Galaxia and Chaos. I think it's absolutely perfect and would give a REAL ending to the point of the entire Sailor Moon franchise which is about a girl's journey to womanhood.

EDIT: The original version of this thread had only 3 films. Film #2 was a team up with Jupiter, Mercury, and Mars but I feel like that is a mistake. There was also the slow burning revelation of who the Moon Princess was as we have 3 different characters who are so much alike. This would just be to screw with the audience and the fans, but we would have 3 different characters named Usagi, Bunny, and Serena, and fans would have to guess which one we chose to make THE moon princess and Sailor Moon. I think the rewrite is a much better story though.

I would also like to point out that money making on these projects is limited; at least for the first few films as we build up credibility through quality storytelling and movie making. Budgets for the first three films MUST Be modest in order for it to succeed with each film coming in with production costs under $100 million (maybe even less. Hunger Games started out with about $80 million I believe and it's the closest thing to this franchise besides Marvel which has extreme budgets).

Actresses would have to sign film deals that extend to at least 3 films to finish out the trilogy, though it would preferable that they sign on to option for 9 films and more.

1) to correct a misconception, Marvel Studios existed before Disney bought the company. They were mostly distributing through Paramount, but they were making the films themselves.

I sort of agree and sort of don't with your plan here. Each movie HAS to stand on its own. Marvel would have got nowhere with Avengers if Iron Man didn't do well. Another case to look at is Superman. The first two were shot together (and for reasons many and varied, things changed and much of Superman II was reshot) and planned as a big two-part movie with the first one an earth-based story and the second a fight with other Kryptonians. And I think Sailor Moon is too massive to boil down to one movie.

I don't want a crazy sprawling 9 movie series though. If I wanted that, I'd just watch the series. This approach can also backfire if the resolving chapters are never made (like Last Airbender). Here's how I've always seen it:

Film 1: Ideally, this is a Sailor V movie. It allows us to set up much of the type of movie these are, and it only follows one character. Usagi and friends can make cameo appearances like in the manga. If Sailor V is a flop, then it becomes another "oh well" footnote in history. But if it does well, the Sailor V merchandise can feul the Sailor Moon movies, just like it did in the manga and anime.

Then we get into the Sailor Moon films proper, which I see in two parts:
Film 2: the first Sailor Moon movie introduces us to Moon, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter and ends with a sort of climactic battle against one of Beryl's agents. Probably Jadeite. The final moments are the appearance of Sailor V joining the team.

Film 3: Struggles within the group about who should be in charge, as Venus has more experience. Ends with the defeat of Queen Beryl.

If these movies do well, then maybe one more movie involving the Outer Senshi and Chibi-Usa. But that's it. I don't want it to go on forever and get into Galaxia or the Starlights or all manner of other things. That's what the anime is for.

I like your plan for the movies too...all the way up until it ends [laughs] I mean, why would we go through the trouble of making live action films just to stop with Rini's storyline? It seems it bit ridiculous if you think about it. And it's like the actual Avengers or any other comic book franchise where things go on forever in different universes with different storylines and such. We know Sailor Moon has a definitive ending, so why not set up for that approach?

Movie 1 - Sailor V
Movie 2 - Sailor Moon and Co.
Movie 3 - End of the Negaverse
Movie 4 & 5 - Rubeus and the 4 Sisters, intro to Rini/Neo Queen Serenity, the Two silver Crystals Plotline and sending the scouts into the future; Movie 5 starts with Pluto taking them through the time gates to The Negamoon family/Wise Man then back again to commence ass kicking.
Movie 6 - Essentially Sailor Moon S; the introduction to the Outer Senshi and their mission, The 3 talismans, moon chalice, Sovereign of Silence, end of the world
Movie 7 - Sailor Moon SuperS essentially; introduction to Dark Moon Circus, Queen Nehelenia, history of Endymion and Helios, The curse upon the Silver Millenium, New Transformations, Introduction to Rini's future team - the Amazoness Quartet
Movie 8 & 9 - Sailor Stars but with an expansion upon Rini's story; Intro to Galaxia and Chaos; Death of many sailor Scouts, Sailor Animas, Sailor Star Lights, Chibi-Chibi; The lady in the lamp and Movie 9 is obviously the end to chaos and the galaxy cauldron, marriage of Serena/Darien.

So a 9 movie sprawl would be absolutely perfect! haha. Glad you mentioned it

Essentially if we casted for Sailor V tomorrow, we would have to find the young blonde female version of Robert Downey Jr. Sailor V looks like she will be playing one of the most important parts of the series next to Sailor Moon. Especially since she would open up the franchise like Iron Man did for the Avengers.

I like the OP's set up and could see it appeal to the masses if it were a good mix of humor and action, sort of Charlie's Angels x The Avengers with a sprinkle of Kill Bill

I also agree with the above post in terms of pacing the films...

Sailor V should be a self-contained story, kind of like Iron man (villain: Dark Agency)

Sailor Moon 1 should feature the 3 scouts vs. Jadeite (stand alone film like Avengers 1) + V cameos

Sailor Moon 2 intro Dark Kingdom 3 remaining *beep* & Beryl (as the magneto of the franchise), intro Jupiter & add V

Sailor Moon 3 concludes negaverse arc, intro Metaria.

*As far as casting, I think Hailee Steinfeld could play any of the scouts due to her range, plus I think with the buzz she has, her like-ability and being part Asian would make for a great lead in/ star to the franchise as V or Moon...

*I also think they should keep their natural hair colors and then it changes to match the anime when they transform into scouts

I like where you're coming from, you're putting a lot of thought into this. But this is a big endeavor, let's see if Sailor Moon can successfully field a new animated series first, before we even consider a movie, let alone a live action movie, let alone multiple live action movies.

The anime market in the US has dwindled to the extent that a live action Sailor Moon in the US is out of the question, but I could see something like this at least being considered at some point down the line in Japan if Sailor Moon Crystal becomes a runaway success. An animated movie would be much more likely but it's not like it'd be the first time Sailor Moon has been made into live action, so it's definitely possible.

The Avengers works because they're drawing on a dozen characters with decades of storylines each. One arc of Sailor Moon doesn't have enough content to field multiple movies unless we're talking low budget, direct to video films. If Sailor Moon wants to borrow the Avengers approach it's going to have to use more than just the storyline of the first arc. Each of these movies would need to be a standalone film in its own right, with major villains and a solid storyline.

Here's my idea. You could probably take each season of the TV show and adapt it separately into an Avengers type scenario.

- One film could detail the inner senshi and their battle against Queen Beryl. Simple enough.

- One film could be about Neptune and Uranus' apocalyptic premonitions and their search for pure hearts, culminating in their defeat of the daimons. The other senshi wouldn't be featured in this one, but you could definitely bring Pluto in to enrich the cast. You could even frame this as an action-romance, and delve deeply into Haruka & Michiru's relationship, and their tortured decision to risk innocent lives for the sake of the world.

- The third film could focus on Chibiusa and her friendship with Sailor Saturn. You could combine this with the storyline from Super S with Pegasus, so that they'll have an objective and enemy to build the movie around (since the S storyline was used for #2).

- Then the fourth film could be the triumphant combination of the groups to defeat the ultimate evil.

Naturally this would require massive changes to make each story work, but that's no different from what they've done with the Avengers. That's just how these things work, that's how they're turned into legitimately viable films.
