Yeah, I suppose Mamoru did find it extremely painful not being able to be with her because of his dreams.
share Its pretty obvious Mamoru loved her all along otherwise he wouldnt have picked on her but Usagi mm thats a little hazier. Just chalk it up to bad writing.
Edit: Looking back Usagi is really jealous when Rei and Mamoru started seeing each other. It might of been a mutual juvenile crush between them but it was there.

Wasn't there a scene where the guy from the arcade asks Mamoru why he always has to pick on Usagi and he says he's not sure why, just that he gets a strange feeling whenever he's around her?

They do explore this in the third season. When they break up and Mamoru say's he doesn't want to live in the past.
shareWell in the English dub at least in the first episode Serena is attracted to him. She's annoyed and offended but she does say "he is kinda cute". There is a fine line between hate and love
It's explored much better in the live action where Usagi and Mamoru build up a proper relationship before they even know anything about their past lives. Their relationship was handled really well there
