Filler Done Right

One of the more common criticisms of anime, 90's anime in particular, is it's excessive amount of "filler episodes", permitting the manga to catch up with the series.
I might be in a minority here, but I think that Sailor Moon serves as an example of how filler can be used as a strength.
Through the filler episodes, we were able to see characterization not utilized in the manga; elevating villains who were mere cannon fodder in the manga into more complex characters with their own arcs, and overall giving the series a heart that is overall missing in Crystal.
Thoughts....?

Yeah I always enjoyed the filler as well.

Except SuperS. I still don't understand why the dragged out that awful season more than S. It was way to sugary sweet, and anything development in those episodes felt boring. ie Amazon Trio getting freed.

Even the finale was so dragged out, it was pointless.

I actually genuinely feel the same. I think the same can be said for "Cowboy Bebop": even its filler episodes were good. We found out more about the Sailor Senshi, and there was so many charm, humor and wit in those fillers, it was a small treat.

Naturally, not every episode was good, but if I had a chance to delete useless episodes from "Sailor Moon", I would barely eliminate about 10-15% of them. And that already says much.

It is great we now have "Crystal" for comparison. Even though it is far more compact and economic, it still feels as if there is something strangely missing from it (the character development).

Disagree heavily with this one, though you are entitled to your opinion. I actually felt the final 2 episodes of the Amazon Trio and the epic sequence where Sailor Moon is falling from the sky to catch Chibiusa, in sheer suspense free fall, was one of the highlights of the entire anime.

In my opinion, of all the Seasons where filler was a positive, Classic and Super were handled well.

Classic had the advantage of telling the foundation story. The possibility of some sort of gain worked well in its favor. At first, we only have Sailor Moon and we know little about the Dark Kingdom/Negaverse. But, slowly, we get knew Soldiers/Scouts, more backstory, and reasons to keep watching. This was done primarily through filler and then fully expressed through plot heavy episodes.

While I feel R missed the mark on that formula, Super did a good job of mimicking it. Yes, we have 5 Soldiers/Scouts but we're curious about the possible 4 that could also join. Yes, we get the basic formula of how Sailor Moon works by now BUT we're given the added curveball of dealing with Pure Hearts and Talismans over just energy. Likewise, the villains were unique rather than cut-and-paste like R and SuperS.

90s Filler is a slippery slope but Sailor Moon often got it right. Crystal attempts to have nothing but plot driven episodes but I feel both the execution and intention hurts it over all. Filler is useful in both offering characterization and subtle additions to the plot as oppose to forcing its audience to miss out on characterization (like Crystal and the other Sailors) or force the audience to binge on plot elements (Crystal with just about any episode).

Not only with the villains, the filler episodes gave crucial character development to the main characters, they became full fledged multidimensional characters and this would never have been possible if they had stayed with the manga's plotline because the manga is severely lacking in structure and development, that is why Sailor Moon Crystal was such a disaster.

The classic Sailor Moon anime remains the best version of Sailor Moon.

I have no issue with Filler if its well written and entertaining, this show had that. Also that Yugioh season Waking the Dragons was Filler Done Right,I just wish the English Dub was not heavily edited

I'm gonna show you something beautiful everyone screaming for mercy

that's pretty much the only good thing about this show. it was one of my first anime but thats because it was one of the ONLY anime available in the states in the early 90s, and I had to wake up at 5:30am to catch it; of course, years later it was on cartoon network and all that.

It really depends on the season for me. I LOVE the filler in seasons 3 and 5, and hate most of the filler in season 2 and 4. I think it's mainly because I love Tomoe, the Witches 5, Sailor Lead Crow, etc and dislike the Amazon Trio, Quartret, and I hate the enemies in season 2.

Season 1 filler is okay, but can drag out.

I do agree that with Sailor Moon crystal, I feel essentially no connection with any of the characters or villains. They essentially bring in a new villain, and kill them off in the same episode which makes me feel that there are no real stakes involved at the finale.

With the characters themselves, I miss the "silly" and "cute" moments that filler provide where you just see completely meaningless and off the wall personality that serves no purpose, but which usually is a redeeming quality of a lot of people.

I understand for fan sake, and artwork sake, they are doing strictly the manga, but I wish they would do 1-2 filler episodes in between each "story" episode. I HATE going, "oh, look, it's Eudial anddddddddddddddddd she's dead." But yes, the anime overdid it. I remember in season 1, there were like 9 episodes before you meet Mars, and then about 18 more before you see Jupiter.
