Was this ever aired in its original version in the US??

Because browsing to this forum I can tell that most of the people are discussing the atrocious DIC version.

reply

Unless you bought the DVDs from Japan, nope.

I can appreciate the Dic/Cloverway as a form of nostalgia, but the original will always be the jewel of the crown.

reply

But wasn't the original released untouched with subtitles a few years ago?? Or did that never happen? So the only Sailor Moon that exists in the US is DIC?

reply

I mean there were the Japanese Boxsets with English Subtitles, which today are worth a small fortune. However, in America the DVDs released were the Dic/Cloverway versions that have duel english/japanese languages.

reply

And when were the dic dvd's released? There is no other english dub in existence in the us?

reply

Sailor Moon has been getting new DVD and Blu-ray releases recently by a company called Viz Media. It includes the original Japanese language track with subtitles and a new English dub that follows the original script.

But still people refer mostly to the Dic version on this board, so strange.

reply

A big part of that is nostalgia, the Dic/Cloverway version is how most Americans first got exposed to Sailor Moon. Heck, for some people like me it was the first anime series they ever watched. And to be fair, despite all the cuts and script rewrites, the Dic dub was done with passion and a lot of effort was put into it. But there does come a time for many when you gotta convert to the original. I used to watch the Japanese version online since the dvds for that version were very expensive. The new Viz Media ones aren't exactly cheap but they are reasonable enough to have the show to own and in tact.

reply

That's exactly my point, at some point if you are a true Sailor Moon fan you'll set the nostalgia apart and realize that the Dic version is bad and not what the show truly was about and just set it aside and forget about it.

Are Sailor Moon reruns still on tv in America? Do they use the Dic version?

reply

As far as I know, Sailor Moon doesn't currently air on tv. The Viz Media version I think airs on Hulu.

Well at least it's something. Does this mean the DIC version will disappear forever?

what the hell does that mean?

That's the one a lot of us grew up watching...even those of us who are not from the US.

It used to air on morning TV after Dragonball Z in the early 2000's. I had to search long and hard to find copies of the Dic version DVDs.

I noticed a couple of sailor moon DVDs at Target the other day...presumably they're the new ones. I've not seen the new dubs, but I might check them out.

were those dic dvds official?

reply

No idea. Possibly not, although I didn't realise that when I got them or I wouldn't have. It's only that I know now how hard they are to come by, and they didn't cost me an arm and a leg to buy, nor did they seem second hand (although they may well have been). They don't look obviously dodgy, and they're not low quality or anything. It's entirely possible they're legit.

I didn't buy them any time recently, I've just dug them out of the cupboard for the school holidays to introduce the show to my daughter. I was surprised to see actual fans of that version on a message board, to be honest. I thought it was just me 

Edit...sorry, just to clarify. I didn't look closely at the ones at Target, because I already have Sailor Moon on DVD. Presumably those weren't Dic dubs. I wouldn't even question the legitimacy of dvds in a major store like that. I'm not in the US, though - I'm talking about Target in Australia.

reply

So you got the dic version in australia too? And that voice cast is not the one from the new dvds right?

reply

Yeah, that was the version of the show that aired on TV. I don't know where the dvd came from, to be honest. It was bought online.

I didn't even know about the new dubs until I came to the board in the past couple of days. I wondered why I'd seen Sailor Moon for sale when it's such an old show, and had been so hard to find years ago when I was looking for it. The new dubs would explain them, I think I'll have to investigate further. I've seen the sub version and can understand why so many people prefer the show not chopped to shreds, I just have a soft spot for the version I saw first.
