Archie (spoilers)

Anyone think that Tim Roth's character was supposed to be the John Hurt Character's bastard son? The way Hurt looked at the necklace at the end and some other little bits always made me think that.

I think there's a reason his mother sent him there. Also saw the bit about the portrait, and it seems the Marquis recognized her.

The Marquis made sure to reach in his coat and take the portrait, so yeah, I got from that scene that Archibald was the Marquis' bastard son. Why else would he put up with all of his garbage?

reply

Yes. There have been several threads about this, but they seemed to have disappeared (maybe too old).

When Archie is introduced to the Duke of Argyll, Argyll says to Montrose, "Another of your likely lads?"

Someone else pointed out about Montrose and Archie sitting for a portrait together. You see this when Roy goes over there after the money is stolen. If Archie wasn't Montrose's son, it seems unlikely that they would pose together for this family-type portrait.

Montrose was clearly Cunningham's father, and the story strongly suggested that. He would have been the one that "surprised" his mother as he had told Betty in his bedchamber. My question is whether Archie either thought this to be true or not. It seemed an obvious consideration on his part.

The Marquis was assisting him as a favour to his mother, as well as acquiring a new duelist to compete for him against the Duke of Argyll, not welcoming him as a long lost son. He employed Cunningham as it were, without revealing the truth to him. His emotional disregard was evident throughout, with the exception of the painting they posed for. Which in itself could simply have been a picture of him with his new champion. He shed no tears at Archie's death and probably felt more about the financial loss and the loss of his new champion.

Well Archie was, after all, just a bastard and not his heir. Plus he was an embarrassment.
