Why didn't Archibald kill Mary?

So when Archibald sneaks up on Rob Roy's house on the boat and sees Mary outside, he shoots at her, apparently intending to kill her. He then rapes her but doesn't kill her. Why would he spare her if his original intent was to kill her? I can only surmise that he felt that it was better to leave her humiliated than to kill her. That way it would get back to Rob Roy and force a confrontation with him.

I think he killed the dog to silence the 'alarm'.

Right, because a gunshot is so much quieter than a dog barking? Really?

He killed the dog so he and his men wouldn't get bit.
