Time lapse/Mary's child

There were two things I was wondering about.

I noticed that Betty's belly had grown quite a bit when she visited Mary and later commited suicide. Does that mean that there is a time lapse of several months from the moment when she was fired? It seemed so strange that her belly was so big all of a sudden. That would also mean that Rob was an outlaw for several months, although it seemed shorter in the film.

After being raped Mary is pregnant and doesn't know who the father is. Could it be that the scene of Rob & Mary at the standing stones is symbolical and meant to tell us, the audience, that Rob is the father? Didn't Mary say something like : "The stones make men hard and women fertile". Sounds like the perfect place to go to if you want to get pregnant.

Those are good observations. I also wondered about the time length between Mary's rape and when she discovered she was pregnant. It seems a little too "soon" for all that to happen. I think the screenplay writers were hoping nobody would notice.

I think she's got the suspicion since the day she was raped. She doubted that she was lucky in cleaning herself by water after the rape, and surely she began to count days and the very first month proved she's got pregnant. The story she told Rob - that she "doesn't know who is the father" - was just a disguise for her true knowledge what the child is Cunningham's. Possibly, there was a chance that the child is Rob's, but until the child is born no one can say for sure. Even after the baby is born, because it may be born after 9 months or LESS. Anyway, Rob was right telling her that he doesn't care for the truth. If he'd be more jealous the child could become very unhappy in the future, tormented with doubts and never knowing who his REAL father is.

it is really a mystery.. i actually thought it was cunningham because that one guy, who was suppose to testify, said "i think theres a little bit of cunningham still in you" and mary stabbed him. also, when mary and rob have sex behind the rock, it was ages before she got pregnant. i mean really. and she never showed a belly, which means she was within three months. rob was away for awhile. i really find it hard to believe it was his. i wish it were, but its not.

Badger my ass its probably Milhouse

Old thread, but I'll respond anyway.

"to Rob, the rape is to be negated"

That's right, and it was further negated when Rob chopped Archie nearly in half, making him gurgle blood and stagger and fall down dead.

"also, when mary and rob have sex behind the rock, it was ages before she got pregnant."

How do you know? That may have happened a few weeks before the rape. Also, Rob and Mary get together many times before and after the rape. The child is most likely Rob's.

Movies always show time lapses through indicators such as the one you were curious about. I notice it in a lot of movies, and especially films about favorite historical figures of mine. I let it go because I "get it". A lot more people seem to have trouble with it, but I understand that there are time constraints despite a desire to try and stay as close the true story as possible without using liberties to move it along or keep it interesting.

I feel dirty, but the rape scene was hot.

...Well...whatever floats your boat, I guess...

-What does it matter?
-It matters! "What does it matter"? I wanna know!

For what it's worth, apparently in reality, there was no Cunningham; Mary may or may not have been sexually molested, but had her next child four years after the event, so never got pregnant by her rapist, if she was raped.

But really, why let a little history get in the way of your quasi-historical epic?
