So after your question I watched the opening again. Here is what I saw. The crook some days or weeks earlier had been transporting gold when his wagon broke down. So he buried the gold in the ground near the wagon so he could come back for it later. As she rode up he was digging holes to try to find the gold while muttering that someone had stolen it. He sees her coming, innocently passing through, and he shoots at her, putting a bullet hole in her hat. She jumps off the horse to fool him into thinking she was dead, then got the best of him and chained him to the broken down wagon. She took his hat and gave him hers with the hole in it and rode off. I have no reason to think that she took his gold.
