I`m really really surprised. In a bad way. I`ve watched The Quick and the Dead a year ago and even though I`ve already seen some classic westerns like Unforgiven by that time, I really enjoyed this one. I liked it so much, that it became one of my favorite movies ever. Come on, folks, it has it all! Interesting story, intriguing plotline, compeling characters, brilliant soundtrack, very good cast! There`s enough of action to makes you even don`t blink till the end. There`s a depth in the main characters and I`m really surprised most of you doesn`t find it...amazing really! I can`t understand why the h*ll you think Sharon`s not good in this one..she`s marvelous!..She can act with just a blink of the eye, her expression tells more then every word could tell. Heckman also is bloody briliant in this one, as always by the way. Crowe also shines in his younger years,he makes very believable character!Even DiCaprio wasn`t that bad also...I mean I really don`t get it, people. I`m so confused. One of my favorite movies with such comments here?!
Oh, and I love the idea of cliches. Yes, there are so many cliches in this movie, but in a strange way, they just make it even better! Particulary in westerns, I really like cliches, unlike every other genre.
Please don`t jump on me saying I don`t know what the real western is. I`ve seen Once Upon a Time in the West, Unforgiven, Fistfull of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Magnificent Seven and so so many more, I`m huge western fan, so I know very well this gender. It`s just The Quick and the Dead which shines above the others along with Unforgiven and Last Outlaw. Best westerns - and maybe movies - in all times.

I think it's a good movie. It's not any sort of in-depth character study or glance into deep blah blah blah. It's just entertaining. And sometimes that's all a movie has to be.

And the showdowns are great.

I remember watching this movie when I was 8 or 9 with my dad, heh, I found it quite enjoyable at that age, not watched it since :O

You're not the only one. I really like this movie, it's one of my favorite westerns. Sure parts of it are goofy as hell, like the bullet wounds with the sun shining through them and Herrod flying through the air when he was shot but there was a lot to like. It had a great cast, the costumes were some of the best ever and the guns were spectacular. Save for some typical Hollywood mishandling.

Some people actually watch movies 'wanting' to like them and looking for what is right about them, rather than what's wrong. While it seems that many others are rude wannabe critics, like yourself, internet tough guy.

You're not the only one.

Generally I don't really go for westerns, but Quick and the Dead is a favorite of mine. My other fave is High Plains Drifter. Both are a wacky take on the western genre.

Gene Hackman was amazing as Herod. I actually prefer him in Q &D to his performance as Little Bill in Unforgiven. As an over-the-top villain he was perfect. Crowe and DeCaprio, also very good.

I feel this film is important because it finally gave Sam Raimi a chance to show his stuff with a cast of big-name actors. He didn't have to hold back on his camera moves, angles, montages, etc. due to external interference.

Depends what you are after. As a western this film is no more than a pointless pastiche of former greats - it's the same type of genre film as Back To The Future 3, and just fills the screen time with homages to other Western films, whilst lacking the style and brilliance of Once Upon A Time In The West.

It certainly doesn't advance the genre in any way, and although it's good to have a female central character it just looks wrong and embarrassing. There's far more verisimilitude in the empowerment given to the female characters in Unforgiven, and that's an altogether more realistic film as well.

On the other hand if you want a fun, no brainer, action flick, based around a simple premise and an even simpler plot then it's great.

There's isn't anything "wrong and embarrassing" about the main character being a female---I found it a lot more interesting than the typical man-comes-into-town-for-revenge western plot,anyway. It's basically just a fun,over-the-top, send-up of westerns updated (circa the '90s) and it was interesting to see Sam Raimi bring his wild & crazy jacked-up to the 10th power whacked-out style to a western--which made it even a hell of a lot more fun to watch.

Your're not the only one who likes this movie. I've seen it years ago when it was released and I liked it a lot, first time I've seen Russell Crowe in a movie and have been a fan ever since.

And yes, I agree, the movie has a lot going for it, great characters, good acting, plenty of action and also humor. My favorite scene is when Herod buys a gun for Cort from the Kid. Great interaction and chemistry among the three of them and I always find it so funny how Herod mocks them all.

It doesn't pretend to be a heavy drama. If you take it as a light action movie, with a little nice story to support it, you'll enjoy it a lot more.

Oh, yes, this is a great movie--very much fun, very entertaining. Everything is so over the top it is almost hilarious, but the performances are SO good across the cast that they keep it all hanging together no matter HOW absurd it gets:

"I can't be killed by a bullet"

Sunlight passing through Herod's bullet-hole wound and shining on the dirt.

Gunplay in the west was never like this.

But who cares, it's just so much fun to watch all these characters.

I agree that this was one of Gene Hackman's best roles & performances.

There goes everything you thought you new about history.

I have an idea...go take a friggen history class! And then after, you can crap all over every time piece you come across because ITS NOT REALISTIC!!!

Some people watch movies for that very reason...we live in a rough world and sometimes people need to GET AWAY from it for a little while. It's almost like a defense mechanism protecting us from insanity by inserting a little fun and safe and harmless excitement.

I mean, I don't *beep* all over the zombies who sit there and watch their house of cards episodes back to back to back. Of course, I hear its a great show and I am pretty close to what you would call an expert political analyst and debater and yet I find house of cards to be AMUSING...but not realistic at all.

To me, you're like one of those people who thinks they have a CLUE about how our political system and legislative and executive branches works from watching House of Cards and West Wing only you think you know how the real "wild west" was because you watched what you might call "realistic" western films...only to find out that your idea of "realistic" is based off of BIG FAT BS.

Of course, because this is a delayed response I can be hopeful you have learned something (but not likely - stupid cannot be cured - it's like trying to cure a dead person - there's just nothing there - like with many peoples' brains) in the past 5 years but boy would I have to be taking a leap of faith there!

It was entertaining with lots of silly mistakes. If you really want to watch a good western watch The outlaw Josey Wales or Lonesome Dove.

For some strange reason (maybe the negative reviews and reactions) I never caught this flick until tonight on Blu-Ray... And what can I say? I personally think it is one of Raimi's best! It's like a comic-book version of great westerns, goofy and fun with just the right amount of character/backstory depth and massive respect for the genre it homages so well. Awesome cast, beautiful cinematography and editing, as well as fully possessing the wacky edge that Raimi had made his own, but lost during the Spidey flicks.
