what exactly was jeremy suppose to be?

an alien?
an angel?

Based on his actions, IMO he was an angel. Of course we'll never know for sure as it never tells us but he was exceptional in his kindness and his humanity so I think an angel.

some insight into his origin might have helped this movie.

jacotodd47 just replied and refreshed my memory big time. I've seen this twice but it's been a long time and I forgot that it was inferred that Powder was hit by lightening which gave him his super powers.

I thought this movie was absolutely fantastic. I get the impression you didn't.

It's been a long time since I've seen "Powder" so I may be wrong. I believe Jeremy was born a regular human being. Then I think he was struck by lightning. This gave him superior intelligence. Then I believe he went to live with his grandparents. WHen they both passed he was on his own. He read voraciously. He became somewhat of an advanced human being. But in reality, he was born just another human being. I think that's how it went.

It's been a long time since I've seen it too and even though I've seen it twice, I forgot about him being hit by lightening. I think you're 100% correct. He was born a regular human being but the lightening strike gave him superior intelligence. It also gave him super powers, as he was able to actually experience what that poor injured deer was going through and pass it on to others, as well as move inanimate objects. Thanks for the input.

Yeah that's right, I forgot about the deer scene. There was something about electricity, too. Jeff Goldblum was doing an experiment in a classroom and - I can't quite remember, I think Jeremy attracted the electricity. Or maybe he repelled it. Do you remember how it ended? I can see Mary Steenburgen (in my mind) chasing him and yelling "Pooooowwddder!". Didn't he fly up to Heaven or something like that at the end?

reply

They were chasing Powder in a large field during a lightening storm, trying to get him to stop running, as it was dangerous, especially for him since he attracted lightening (and electricity). He was hit by lightening and he just vanished, much to everyone's shock. There was no body, no remains, he just vanished.

It was a bittersweet ending. Powder was so disgusted by people and their cruel natures that he couldn't handle living anymore. While technically it's open to interpretation, it left me thinking he went to heaven.

reply

Gotcha. Yeah that sounds about right. Yeah, he was too advanced. He didn't fit in the world and it wasn't just because of his appearance. Good flick, thanks for reminding me.

EVOLUTION.
