John Smith had plenty of time to run away

If Thomas was able to escape quickly enough before the Indians captured him after Kokoum's death, why didn't John run away too.

Instead if just telling him to "get outta here" they BOTH could have ran.

Then they would've come after the both of them and who knows what would've happened to Thomas or the other men. John Smith decided to take the fall for him, and maybe try to reason with the natives.
