Which movie is more underrated?
Pocahontas or The Princess and the Frog?
shareI would say Pocahontas though I liked Pocahontas a lot better than The Princess and the Frog. Hercules was another one that was underrated I liked Hercules a lot too.
shareHonestly, among the general public, they're pretty much even in terms of overall perception. Since I think Princess and the Frog is the better film, I'll go with that.
"Unless you're an alien, time traveler, or esper, your opinion doesn't matter."
Pocahontas. I don't really like Princess and the Frog.
"Scream for me, Ponyville!"-Iron Maiden
The Princess and the Frog.
What we do in life, echoes in eternity.
This is honestly a tough one, good call lol!
Enough time has passed for us to truly assess The Princess and the Frog's legacy, I believe. And honestly I would say: yes, it's more underrated than Pocahontas. Both films are obviously underrated. I think Tiana is more visible in the Disney Princess franchise, but I believe it's more of a technicality: they want to promote the "first black princess", and also: Tiana IS an official princess in her movie (towards the end of the film), instead of Pocahontas who is merely a chief's daughter, technically.
But the Disney Princess promotion of Tiana aside, her film isn't memorable to most Disney fans. Pocahontas may not be that memorable overall either, but it gets more attention overall because of the popularity of its music ("Colors of the Wind" especially, but even its lesser songs are more well-known than anything fron 'Frog'). Also, Pocahontas as a film was a little more well-liked by fans, I think. It has more of a following than 'Frog'.
It's hard to say. While most critics and general audiences tend to think The Princess and the Frog is a better film overall, ther is no doubt that Pocahontas is the more famous of the two.
Even though there are A LOT of people that hate Pocahontas, the visuals are iconic (pretty much anytime Pocahontas poses dramatically with the leaves flying past her), several of the songs are classics, and it made much more money at the boxoffice and in home video sales (adjusted for inflation).
And despite the fact that Pocahontas gets criticized a lot by historians and people tend to roll their eyes at it's preachiness, it really does have a large fanbase. Several girls I know have said Pocahontas was their favorite film growing up.
On Facebook, Pocahontas has more likes than The Princess and the Frog. In fact, Pocahontas also has more likes than other films that seem to have a better reception, including Sleeping Beauty, Tarzan, Hercules, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Wreck It Ralph, Big Hero 6, Lady and the Tramp, Alice in Wonderland, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, Dumbo, Fantasia, Bambi, Pinocchio, every hand-drawn movie from the 2000s and every movie from the 70s and 80s except for the Little Mermaid.
While it doesn't have the vocal haters of Pocahontas, I don't think the Princess left much of an impression on general audiences. I love Tiana, but she's not a favorite among little girls. The sidekicks have been mostly forgotten, and the soundtrack didn't impress most. THe songs were mostly bland and blended together, though I know "Friends on the Other Side" is well regarded as a villain song.
I feel the first half of Princess and the Frog is awesome and the second half is horrible. Pocahontas is a good film so is therefore the more underrated.
Just my feelings.
