Random R rating
This was back when there were still random R-rated studio movies. The language would be easily toned down, nowadays.
Around the early 00's, they started really watering down almost everything into PG-13.

I don't know, the theme is pretty heavy. You've got some gruesome slow death scenes, lots of corpses and they have faces too (ie. you're made to identify with the people dying) and the possible horror of our species' extinction by viral contamination, I'd say that alone makes it R worthy, with foul language or without. Have the ratings changed so much that this movie would only be PG-13 now? I just don't see it. It's not as bad as some R rated movies I'd agree to that for sure, but it's too much for a minor rating.
shareI don't remember this being Rated R, but sure enough it is. I saw it in the theater, I don't think we had to sneak in and we didn't have parents with us. And they used to show this to us in high school whenever a science teacher didn't have a lesson plan or whatever. The science department had a copy on VHS that I probably saw 5-6 times.
