How come nobody ever talked about Paul Sorvino's performance?

I know everybody loves Hopkins and thinks he carries this movie, but for Nixon I've just always sorta wondered how Walter Matthau might have played the part. Somehow even the cartoon caricatures we see in the Lincoln Memorial scene resemble the real guy more than Anthony does, and it took me out of the movie in that moment. I'm not complaining, in fact that's my favorite scene, just saying I'm curious how someone else would have played it.

And so as a result of that I guess I'm just surprised nobody went nuts over Paul Sorvino. I KNEW he was in the movie because I read his name in the opening credits, apparently forgot about it at some point, and it took all the way 'til the end credits before I realized "Oh my God, that was Sorvino? He disappeared into that part!" Unfortunately I can't remember how well I knew Kissinger at the time to determine how convincing he might be to someone who lived through the era, but regardless, now every time I see Henry I always think of Paul.

Oh and Hoskins is fun to watch in this too!

I agree I just recently got this on blu-ray and hadn't seen it in years. But now after being older and more familiar with Kissinger Paul Sorvino was fantastic with the scenes he was in and I barely recognized him.

You were fantastic...absolutely fantastic...and d'you know what? So was I.

reply

Felt embarrassed by it, because usually I recognize people!

I thought it was funny b/c at first I thought he was just mumbling his way through with a vague impression, but then started to think, wow, that's a really impressive performance.

reply

Glad you noticed too.

I agree. Paul Sorvino was excellent as Kissinger. He truly transformed himself and became Kissinger. Too bad he didn't receive any award recognition for his portrayal.

reply

They could at least make a Kissinger statuette for him!

reply

That would be awesome.

reply

Should it be of Kissinger, or him as Kissinger?

reply

Good question. LOL

I'm thinking model the head after one and the body after the other, and if done in bronze you wouldn't even be able to tell which was the biggest influence. Bronze helps too because everyone wore such ugly suits back then.
