How come nobody ever talked about Paul Sorvino's performance?
I know everybody loves Hopkins and thinks he carries this movie, but for Nixon I've just always sorta wondered how Walter Matthau might have played the part. Somehow even the cartoon caricatures we see in the Lincoln Memorial scene resemble the real guy more than Anthony does, and it took me out of the movie in that moment. I'm not complaining, in fact that's my favorite scene, just saying I'm curious how someone else would have played it.
And so as a result of that I guess I'm just surprised nobody went nuts over Paul Sorvino. I KNEW he was in the movie because I read his name in the opening credits, apparently forgot about it at some point, and it took all the way 'til the end credits before I realized "Oh my God, that was Sorvino? He disappeared into that part!" Unfortunately I can't remember how well I knew Kissinger at the time to determine how convincing he might be to someone who lived through the era, but regardless, now every time I see Henry I always think of Paul.
Oh and Hoskins is fun to watch in this too!
