Meister must have been the greatest football coach ever

...because he's still there after 30 years. What did they do, win the state title every season?

I'm all decked out in red & black.

reply

He was a Phys. Ed. teacher, with coaching as part of his teaching duties. Presumably, he would have had classes, which are not necessary to show for the purposes of the film.

reply

Our high school had the same coaches (football & basketball) for my 4 years, and they were there the previous 4, and the 4 after. All of them also taught classes: World Geography, Civics, History, and Driver's Ed. DellaStreet 7/20/09, 1:10P.M.

reply

he's right, high school football coaches don't last that long unless they are winning titles for 30 years.

at least they don't in Ohio and Texas

reply

Bull! My football team was the worst in the state, and we had the same coaches forever, and ever, and ever. They taught many other classes too. In the big football states it may be different, but in most states they don't really care.

reply

What oceaneyes said, honestly.

In Texas, having a coach for decades is something you do not see; in Oregon, I have to believe they aren't on the same hot seat.

In a lot of the "non-football" states, you have coaches who stay at a school for thirty or more years.

As long as a coach can produce winning teams on a regular basis, dependent upon the expectations of the alumni and school board, a lot of schools will stick with the coach they have, gold ball or no gold ball.

If you've heard of it, it's already too mainstream for me.

reply

Hot seats were around back then?

reply

Probably not in Oregon. Also, if he won a championship or two in his time there, I could easily see the school standing by him for years and years. Even if they had a few down years.

If you've heard of it, it's already too mainstream for me.

reply

They play football in Oregon? Interesting...

reply

My HS football coach retired after coaching about 35 years at our school. He won one state title, but was in the playoffs almost every year.

It's safe to assume Meister was pretty successful.

reply

No, it is just that it was a small town so he didn't have any other place to go to coach. In the big cities, you would have coaches maybe going from one school to another.

reply

Here's another thought. In the old days, teachers and coaches stayed in one school for many years rather than jump around. Maybe that is what they were doing with the Coach. Also, it isn't like pro football where if the team loses several years they give the Coach the axe.

reply

You guys ever hear of tenure???

It's been the bain of high schools forever.

He didn't have to win every year

My HS coach never made it past regionals, a couple kids got some scholarships
Pitt and Penn State

he was a peckerhead, but had tenure they couldn't get rid of him

Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster.

reply

The only thing I found odd about the Coach was he didn't seem to age as much as Mr. Hollland.

reply

He aged a bit. You can see he has grey sideburns.

reply

Drinking.

reply

HS chics kept him young.

"Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive le sacre mercenaire."

reply

See, tenure wouldn't keep him from losing his coaching job, it only applies to a teaching job.

That being said, a coach getting fired from a program usually comes down to a couple things. The first being how much the school and town actually care if a team wins. They may go to the games every week but does anyone care if they go on and make the playoffs and/or win state. If the school or town really cares about having a winning program, then the second part is whether or not the boosters want the coach to keep his job.

The thing about this movie though is that it starts in the 60's, when there wasn't as much pressure to win all the time. Athletics was really just something you did because it was fun and wasn't all wrapped up in making money. So a coach that started back then could stay on for a while and eventually the school just gets used to them being there and taking the bad seasons with the good.

reply

Meister may not deserve the axe but some Axe Deodorant & Body Spray would sure help his students and him; a rather sweaty and smelly looking guy.

reply

It's high school, not Big Ten college.
