I love this movie and It makes me cry every time.
That being said, I'm thrilled we get to know Mr. Holland on a deeply personal basis, because otherwise, on the surface, he's a mean dad and miserable teacher who nearly had an affair with one of his students.
At first he's not a great dad But he warms to it--- that deafness thing was not a easy situation to throw one in now even worse in the early 60s

Even the Bible says there is a line between temptation and deed. Are you setting yourself up as the chief judge of everyone else's morals.

shareThe kid wasn't born deaf, and the Doc after the Fire Engine incident said he had lost 90% of his hearing, so 10% were still there at that time.
shareI think pompous is a better categorization, he felt he was above teaching, wasn't really interested in it, until he humbled himself and learned that it had a lot to offer. Generally, that was the point of the movie.
