D'Amour's tattoo...?

WTF was up with D'Amour's tattoo on his back? The IMDb "trivia" section says that it was added after Bakula researched the character, but it doesn't say why. Anyone know? Thanks!

Hmmmm, partial answer to my own question. According to D'Amour's wikipedia page: "His body is marked heavily by tattoos that confer protection against evil."

I'd still like more of an explanation than that, if anyone has one. Like what exactly is depicted, and how it confers protection, etc.

Well it's like any sigil with occult intent. Think of it as something akin to a sign at a lavatory Male / Female - you obey those signs and micturate where told to, Harry is marked with symbols meaning "do not enter".

Overly simplistic explanation but conveys the idea.

I remember the character from one of Clive Barker's books prior to seeing this movie when it was released. All I remember nowvus that he would get a tattoo each time he solved a case.
