montana location

This film takes place in Montana, yet it was filmed in Canada. This film is the reason why so many people want to move to Montana. Montana to be frank, is not quite what is represented in this excellent movie. Are there areas in Montana that look like that? yeah, here and there, but by and large, Montana is a grassland desert with a few sparse and smaller mountain ranges. If you want to experience this films locations check out British Columbia and southwest Alberta provinces in Canada. As for Montana purists; yes I currently live in Montana. Yes its western Montana where the mountain ranges are at. Yes I've hiked and explored the ranges that are similar to those in this movie. So I hope no one takes this post as an attack on either this fine movie or the otherwise beautiful state of Montana, I'm just usually a little annoyed with a film claiming to be in a certain location when its not. Especially locations as highly sought after as Montana. As a final note, you would never get paid that kind of money to hunt criminals 'especially in Montana. While a splendid state to vacation to and explore, it is a lousy state to try and reach middle class living.

I don't know much about making a middle-class living in Montana, but to your original question... The Canadian Rockies extend well south of the U.S. - Canada border, well into northwest Montana. This region contains many sections that look very similar to the mountain regions portrayed in the movie. This region is anchored by Glacier National Park.

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

You are correct, and the film does even state that it is occurring in that region of NW Montana. However, in real life, there is no area there called the oxbow and it does host some reasonable sized towns such as Kalispell. In that remark though, I do agree with you, glacier NP is in that area and thats what the film makers were aiming for. As for that middle class living, lets just say that if anybody wants to live the mountain horse ranch life that this film so wonderfully portrays, make sure you are bringing plenty of money with you from somewhere else.

As a kid growing up in the '60s and '70s, I spent 4 or 5 summers on a ranch (Cresent Lazy H -- can't believe I can still remember the name) about 5 miles west of Jackson Hole, WY. There were several ranches in the vicinity, all bank-rolled by their owners with money from their Southern California jobs. They all operated locally at a loss.

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

sounds about right, as they say around here, you pay a hefty wilderness tax to live here.
