Everytime I watch this film I always wonder this and never thought there was any substantive evidence either way and figured I'd post the question here to see if anyone could anser it or offer any insight. Based on Bev's reaction when she got up all groggy and rushed out of the house ultimately getting in the house and Ronnie's reaction to her groggyness; do any of you think that Ronnie took advantage of Bev and date raped her? What do you guys think?
It's been almost ten years since I saw this, but I seem to remember that her pants were also unzipped. I assumed at the time that she indeed have sex with him, but I didn't think it was date rape, only drunken bad decision-making. I remember feeling very sad for her and kind of sick to my stomach.
I just watched this movie for the first time last night, and I was wondering the same thing. The director left things irritatingly unclear. The scene seemed to suggest he had taken advantage of her, but if so, why was she fully clothed when she woke up? Just doesn't make sense to me.
I think it was clear SOMETHING happened, and Ronnie certainly orchastrated it. He's feeding her booze at the bar; despite Little Jr. Brown's orders to take her straight home - "TO HER HOUSE!" - Ronnie takes her back to his place instead. And then the next morning she's all disgusted with herself once she's had a few seconds (in my opinion) to recollect what happened, while Ronnie's cooking her a "morning after" breakfast and acting like he expects kisses & hugs from her.
So, if we're talking legalities, it was rape because not only did Ronnie *KNOW* that she was too drunk to consent to sex, but Ronnie's also the one that got her that way in the first place! I don't know why she was fully clothed - maybe she had a "moment of clarity" in the middle of the night, put on her clothes and tried to go home, but she didn't make it that far. Or Helen Hunt just didn't feel like doing a nude and/or underwear shot - who knows?
i think he did take advantage of her after he got her drunk..her pants were undone and then when she bumps into ronnie on the way out, she calls him a pig
it is better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it
I appreciate that the director let the proceedings of the prior night be vague.
I think it is pretty clear that Bev was taken advantage of in some manner. You don't have to get someone naked to get the job done, just pull their pants down, and she likely pulled them back up before falling asleep.
He was clearly pretty happy with himself the following morning.
Anyway, he got his. When you walk into an office and everyone is wearing raincoats. That is a bad sign.
