Metallica

The song during the beginning credits sounds like a really weak Enter Sandman rip-off.

It just bugs me when movies and tv shows do that sort of thing - rip off popular songs like that.

That's all, go ahead and flame away.

Wasn't it written by John Carpenter? I think it's just a coincidence. It's kinda like how Mega Man's "Elec Man's Stage" theme(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns0NSzqnjvA) opening sounds like Journey's "Faithfully"(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMD8hBsA-RI).

Its not a coincidence. Enter Sandman came out like two years before and its obvious that JC and the other guy (who probably did the actual songwriting) were trying to make a Metallica sounding song. Its a terrible song and is so distracting. My least favorite part of the movie. Worst bookends ever.

reply

I totally agree. It made it seem like a made for tv movie right from the start.

In the Ghost of Mars behind-the-scenes, John Carpenter admits that his favorite bands are Metallica, Anthrax, Buckethead, The Bad Brains, and Bathory. He stated that he orignally wanted Metallica to do songs for Escape From LA and Ghost of Mars, but never bothered to ask.

However, I actually do like the song, even though it sounds like a Enter Sandman knock-off. It sounds like AC/DC meets Metallica

I have El Sonoma del Torra de Fiero Syndrome. Be happy you don't. Trust me.

reply

Eh? The song actually is AC / DC's Hells Bells.

Released in 1980.

That's not the same song masa-25. It was an original score written by John Carpenter. Does sound very much like Metallica.

That is NOT Hell's Bells.

Yeah, it's a pretty hokey and rather obvious Metallica knock-off. Shame on Carpenter, who's music usually defines a film rather than drags it down.

Great film, weak score.

I like the intro of the song when it shows the Newline logo, but the rest of the song is pretty lame. The movie redeems itself with the asylum scene right after it imo though so its no biggie.

This is funny. You people think it sounds like Metallica? Wow...

It just sounds like a late 80s hard rock band playing a funky little tune to throw you off while you see the printing press for a book.

reply

At least the first minute of the song absolutely is a Metallica ripoff - specifically Enter Sandman. I personally can't see how anyone familiar with the song and its structure wouldn't make that connection.

reply

Metallica were rip-offs first. I really like them, but they've admitted to ripping off riffs from lesser-known bands.

Yep, Metallica have pretty much always worn their hearts on their sleeves. It's been well documented on their love of British Heavy Metal, and the covers that they played in small gigs in the early days were mostly mistaken to be their own songs (which was probably intentional on Metallica's part!).

I personally think that the opening music in the film sounds more like MEGADETH, melody-wise, from their "Youthanasia" era...

I love the theme...

I began to think that it was an actual bed track from Enter Sandman at one point, and was almost expecting Tom Leykis to make a cameo appearance any second -- until I started listening more closely. =)
