Was John pretending to be illiterate, just to further convince the other guys that he really isnt a copper? or was there a another motive behind him. I mean when he claimed he cant read, the guys were convinced at that time anyway, that he's not an undercover cop, as he had convinced them earlier with him

shareAbsolutely correct. If you notice, he smirks to himself discreetly shortly afterwards in a self-congratulatory manner. Also his senior officer remarked down at the station some time after something like "Oh that's a relief, for a moment I thought we had an illiterate Police Officer" to which he replies sarcastically something like "Perish the thought". It was just another ploy to put the "Dogs" off the scent.
