over the ending
its very clear that john is no longer working for the police and has just become a nazi because of his undercover work. how anybody could think that john still works for the police after seeing how his life deterierates in the last 15-20 mins of the film is far beyond me.
i agree with you, he's not a copper anymore. thats why trevor goes after him.

That doesn't clear anything up at all. It could have been, as I believe, a spur of the moment and misleading comment made to Trevor in order for him not to get involved. My feeling is that John just went even further off the rails than he already was, the old firm was split up and he had to find another source of unity with like-minded thugs. That's what John thrived on - the rush of being part of something so highly charged and violent. As the film progressed he became more disinterested in the police force so the notion of him still wanting to be part of it seems unlikely. Besides, if John was undercover, it's highly likely Trevor would have known about it, being he senior. Therefore, to say such a comment from a man obviously not in right mind provides clarity to the situation is rather weakly founded.
sharehm no he isnt a copper any more he is completely insaine, he lost the plot somewhere in the middle (after the market place stabbing) the end is just his downward spiral into complete ruin, in his mind he is still "on the job" but in reality he is a nutjob, just look at the way he is zeig heiling at the end.

Add to this that he's got a Union Jack tattooed on his forehead - no, he's not undercover anymore but is a hired thug. Remember the scene in the pub - Winton says to him, "a lot of people have been asking me about you".

i think he just loves to be someone that he isn't...like being a hooligan was far from his normal life, and so is being a skinhead...i think he loves to get away from it all, and still not get arrested for it.
sharethis - if you interpret the ending by taking John at his word that he's still a copper, the implication is that it was never about football or hooliganism for John, it was more that whatever undercover work they put him on, he would take it way too far and get way too personally attached to it
