So it was obvious by the end of the film that John (Reece Dinsdale) had murdered a rival fan. But why would the other 3 cover it up. Perhaps it was to highlight the corruption that exists in the police but when he was told that he'd 'crossed the line' surely by destroying evidence they too had crossed the line as well?..

I didnt think it was 100% the rival fan died. Could have just been badly injured.

Fair enough but my point was he wasn't necessarily the person who stabbed the fan. It could have been pertwee. Him going over the line might just have referrered to the fact he was there.
shareI've always assumed he stabbed the person and blocked it out from his memory by extreme stress - he was covered in blood which wasnt his own rather than pertwee, and his colleagues would have been far more motivated to cover up his act of murder than that of a Gilligan they were investigating.
That said, CCTV picture quality is far from perfect, especially from when the film was set so it could have been unclear in the confusion of a bundle of people who did what so yeah maybe it wasn't him, we'll never know, and nor will he!

I think they covered it up for a couple of reasons. Firstly, John was their mate. Secondly, had they reported it John would have been up on trial for murder and it all would have come out about him being a police officer so all of them would have been outed and my guess is they were worried about the possibility of retribution coming from the hooligan element of the Shadwell fans.
