Yes they did not walk away holding hands--but they probably became friends. They were staring at the Columbus statue in the middle of the quad (this was probably now the end of the semester which is odd but they had Fudge Ice Cube "walk" in a fall graduation ceremony--but maybe it was also end of spring term--the weather was certainly nice). Anyway, Malik mentions that he lost his girl here, Kristie Swanson blames herself, but he told her you can't. It is awkward kind of condolences and then Malik says I have to go and they part ways. Then he starts running as graduation music plays in the background, we see a montage of students graduation pictures (Ice Cube) and a marching band...then Professor Phipps walks out of a building on campus and under an American Flag they type out unlearn.
