I think one of the morals of this movie is that you should probably show a little kindness to someone regardless of the color. Ice Cube and his friends immediately began pushing remy's buttons and generally acting disrespectfully to him, and that was completely unwarranted. I can understand being mean to someone if they are mean first, but all Ice Cube saw in Remy was another white boy. It wasn't just racism on the part of the whites but blacks too.
I always thought if Ice Cube and Busta Rhymes had been nicer to Remy at the beginning, he wouldn't have become a Nazi Skinhead. That being said, I was a freshman in college in 1995 (the same class as the movie) the first time I saw this movie on campus TV. I knew nothing about it. But for the first, like, 1/4th of the movie, I thought Remy was the coolest. I was all "Hey, I like Danzig and Rage Against the Machine too!" I too came from a small town with limited ethnic interactions and I was hoping Singleton would have Remy be a more positive character. Then as the movie went on I started to freak out. I was like "Wait a minute, will I freak out, become a Nazi skinhead too and start killing people?"
Of course now I know now that the movie was full of exaggerated stereotypes of all ethnic groups, but back then, it scared the crap out of me. And, thanks to this movie, every time I see something Michael Rapaport is in, I can't help but think "Remy." I would watch "The War at Home" on tv before it was canceled and be all "Holy Crap, Remy has a family! I hope he doesn't kill them!"
Remy became a skinhead because he didn't fit in with any other groups. Remember when he was at that Frat party talking and it was like no one was listening to him and when he went to Billy and asked him if he "hit it" they started yelling ta him. He had a time adjusting to being away from Idaho. He was alone and had no friends. The skinheads actually listened to him and gave him something to believe in. If Busta and Cube were nicer i think would have just slowed down the process but he still would have probably changed because he was such an outcast to begin with.
I always wonder if he and Malik would have been roomates first what would have happened.
I've always agreed with this, I'm african-american, but I always hated how Fudge & Dreads were inexcusably mean and disrespectful to Remy...there was no cause nor justification for it. You judge every man by his own works, they were bullies and I believe pushed him to the skin heads.
Don't tell me about how racist white people were/are, because it simply doesn't matter...you don't return evil for evil.
Wayne Enterprises buys and sells companies like Stark Industries
Although the philosophy sucked, I respected the skinhead leader for two things- "you shouldn't have dropped out" and when he talked about what it takes and takes away when you kill another person.
that aside, I really hated how nearly everyone in this film was depicted. I think the only one I really liked and respected was the black chick (Balik's girlfriend?)
"Atlas Shrugged- Part 1"- NOW in Canada Coming soon to DVD!
lol black racism exists but you cant compare it to white racism. Ive been called many things in my time....But how many times will you catch me being racist towards white people? Can you blame black people for resentment....fire dont go with fire, but despite all that theres still black people like me that give people benefit of the doubt but we know what you really think!
No, I don't blame the resentment any more than I blame whites for having racist traces from their upbringing. Neither one can be turned off at the switch. Like most other things, it takes time for it to dissipate. The racism, the resentment...it's an ugly chapter in man's history. And it's a long history that's going to take more than 50 years to cleanse.
No I cannot blame the Black man for resentment. Anger itself is not always a bad thing. It can be a very good motivator to taking a stand against injustice. But it NEVER pays to make a scapegoat of an innocent. Because then you only become what you hate...a persecutor. Nobody excuses a bully for taking his issues out on a smaller kid and racism is RACIAL BULLYING plain and simple.
When you confront the ones who put you down and defy them that's good. But when you kick the little dog because you can't get back at the big dog, you're a bully and a coward. And therefore a Racist.
When you kick the little dog because you can't get back at the bigger dog, you're a bully
This is brilliant and perfectly encapsulates my own philosophy.
By all means anyone who had been victimised has every right to go after their victimisers or anyone else who oppresses another. However, no one is entitled to take out their own mistreatment on another entirely innocent third party. All you achieve by doing so, apart from hurting an innocent, is to implicitly legalise the actions of your own oppressor because effectively you're saying it's 'okay' to pick on the weak and/or the innocent.
