What kind of accent did the professor have?

Laurence Fishborne's character....it sounded African. Does anyone know?

Side note: I know that it's a serious movie but off topic comment--the professor seemed to have an oral fixation. He was always eating, drinking, smoking out of a pipe, or sucking on a peppermint.

For the longest time (and I've seen this movie about eight years ago), I thought that sounded like a german accent (yes, there are black folks in Germany lol).

Thanks, but it sounds absolutely nothing like a German accent to me!

It seems like the previous poster suggested Jamaican or Caribbean. I am thinking South African. Hmmmmmm.....still not sure.
