4k blu ray is horrible

its so damn dark. even in daylight scenes theres like a dark blue/greyish filter over everything. ill compare it to my 1080p copy but its unwatchable. I had to crank the gamma way up high to see anything.

Sounds like your setup is the problem, not the disc.

do you have it? I even got two copies

I have two OLED tvs and a MacBook. it looked dark as hell on the laptop. I thought. "its fine, once I watch it on video the HDR will kick in and it'll get brighter!". nope I had to use the brightest picture settings. then crank it even more. and even then looked like nighttime and dark as hell in every scene

HDR makes things darker... Blackest black and all that, that's why. Try turning it off?

reply

HDR makes dark things darker, and bright scenes bright. but its just all dark, however sometimes even though you download a 4k file it'll be SDR so maybe thats it

I saw it twice recently. The second time really close to the TV and with the commentary on to focus on the image. It's very soft. You can barely tell it's 4k.

Agreed, it's (sort-of) OK in the night scenes (but the day sequences look like it's constantly about to rain) It's a strange added 'tint' that actually deprives detail and depth, that should be found in a 4K release.
Apparently Mann approved the 4K restoration a few years back (it even got an anniversary cinema screening with the cast and crew in attendance)
It's not unlike the mess that William Friedkin made of 'The French Connection' (around the time of the Blu-Ray boom)

The Blu-Ray that accompanies this 4K release is favourable over it's UHD headliner.
