Okay, before her death, the old nanny tells David about the mom coming home, the kids were in the mom and dads bed, dad was drunk and mom saw Christina and Robert… ... then mom goes and drowns herself?

I’m sure the book had more detail to what the heck she was talking about, so Can anyone please elaborate on what I missed in translation?

It's obviously meant that Robert and Christina were having sex. This is hinted throughout the movie was their unnatural sibling relationship which included nude portraits and mouth kissing.
